To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

We have released a new version of Yet Another Space Shooter.
With this techdemo we combine aspects of first person shooter and space simulation into a fine blended mixture. You can walk around on the surface of earth and mars as well as fly in space to visit our solar system. You can drive several vehicles, such as cars, hoovercrafts and spaceships. Weapons are included to serve your destructive mind. A carrier like spacecraft is in orbit of earth and can be commanded and walked upon.
Additionaly, there is an updater included, which will inform you of newly available modifications. Several RSS feeds on our webpage are available to keep you up to date.
Windows only. Please enjoy your stay.
You are welcomed to post anything related to this release at our project forum or here.
You've got some sweet stuff in there man. Good job !
Nice, looks like its move on a bit from the last demo. 😀
You want to go for seamless travel from the surface to orbit,it may be hard to do but it
would set the game apart from other J.A.S.S. games.
Thanks!
@PINBACK: You can find a topic in our forum, whether we should or should not implement seamless transitions. We are still pondering how exactly we want to handle this issue in YASS in the future. Feel free to contribute your two cents, I just did a couple minutes ago... 😉
Hey Ronin
Finally got around to giving YASS a try. It has improved a lot since the last time I played the techdemo. I ran into some issues and not sure if it is my PC/gfx card. Right now I run Win7 64bit Pro with a ATI4890.
Since I am in QA by trade i'm going to just tell ya what I experienced while playing:
- Physics for the properties of items needs to be adjusted. For instance I ran up to a spaceship and into it and the ship moved a bit. The same with the vehicles and the weapons bounce too much when you drop them.
- Muzzle fire from the guns are not coming out the barrel it is under the barrel. But the bullet goes where the cross-hair is.
- Couldn't kill anyone in the field area
- The people walk in a route and isn't randomized
- When running I sometimes saw a graphic anomaly (see pic)
On the inside of the spaceship
Any chance we can instruments that show altitude, level/pitch of ship to help you fly better? Right now you don't take any damage when slamming into the ground. I did it often, still practicing the flight controls but getting the hang of it. I flew around the starter planet and couldn't find much else besides the base. Is there anything else?
I couldn't actually go into space in YASS (see pic)
I got that error every time I tried to leave the planet.
I like you auto updater with the hookin of your site/server info in the window. Couldn't seem to figure out how to interact with the blue information icons? But overall its great to see the progress that has been made since the first techdemo I tried. Keep up the good work and can't wait to fly in space.
Hey Darkone,
thanks a lot for testing, I'm glad that it is at least running on your box. I figured that we'd have some problems on Win7 with User Account Control.
I just comment on the issues by sequence:
- I changed the calculation of mass prior to the release, so the mass properties of the objects need to be adjusted indeed.
- The muzzle fire as well as the visualization of the gun in hand is quite experimentally at the moment. This needs to be revised completely.
- Yeah, this bug is really annoying. You cannot shoot at any animated mesh right now. And that'd be the most interesting targets...
- The people are starting together, but should split up and walk different pathes after a short while.
- This graphics anomaly is actually the mouth of the player character. The position of the camera needs to be adjusted, when running.
Spacecraft:
For the instruments to show actual flight attitude informations we need to implement render to texture functionality. This might take a while. 😉 I removed the damage routines completely prior to the release, because of some unsolved respawn issues, so neither the character nor the spacecraft are taking any damage. I hope to get this back in in the near future. Interesting spots on the surface of earth would be the mountain base with the teleporter to mars, the shooting range and the hoovercraft race. Well, there is another island next to the one where you start, with a small base on it, but nothing to do in particular. I plan to put some enemies there, when I implement the new AI which I am working on right now... 🙂
Space:
It is strange that you aren't able to fly into space. It looks like an error with your graphics card drivers. It seems to crash when trying to load the shaders to visualize earth with atmosphere. That'd be something MasterD should have a look at, too. What does happen when you use the teleporter (inside the mountain base) to go to mars surface and jump into space from there? Does that work?
Information boxes:
You are supposed to walk up to any box and use it with the use key (SPACE as per default). Then a context menu should pop up where you can select to read the box. Pretty much like you would pick up a gun or anything.
Thanks again for testing and pointing out these issues! Your experiences are extremely valuable for us... 😉
Cheers,
Ronin
edit: I realized that by "field area" you propably were referring to the shooting range. I thought you meant the AI people which unfortunately you aren't able to shoot either. At the shooting range there is another bug responsible for the fact that you don't hit the targets. When you stand inside the building you are always hitting the building. This is rather annyoing. Momentarily you are supposed to step outside the building after pushing the button, this way you should be able to hit the targets with no problem.
