To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

The great devs that are working on Infinity have created an amazing game engine. Which the will be letting others use when Infinity is done, not sure if it will be free or for a fee. But look at the early screenshots of the planets from the atmosphere and at terrain level.
Since we will be able to land/take off on planets this will be some of the visuals you might see. Infinity is still some ways off but if the devs deliver on their product it will be definitely be the space sim mmo to own.
Would love to see what other indie developers could do with this engine so i hope they give it out free for people doing freeware projects.
I wish I could do what they are doing with the mod tools for Crysis or the UT III UDK tools.
I really want to learn how to use UDK and make a game either by myself or with some people. Wonder if they will ever release a free version of the I-Novae for us struggling newbs trying to learn. The planets this engine makes is really nice.
Always thought it was shame they never went for a single player game first, then do a an
online one.
online one.
Not a shame, a crime. They did an April Fool's a few years back that announced they were switching to single-player and for a few beautiful moments I was in absolute heaven...until I realised it was a joke. 😥 This engine is absolutely screaming for someone to stick Elite-style single-player gameplay in it. Whenever I think of Elite IV, these images are what appear in my mind. I do wonder if an in-game AI would take too much system resources, though. Perhaps ditching that was the trade-off to get such stunningly detailed planets.
I think the most beautiful thing about the engine is its realism. Th developers have got everything right - the scale, the lighting, atmospheric effects...It's about time space games showed us the realism of being in space. Dark planets lit only on one side, true stellar distances, neon luminescent backdrops used only sparingly not in every system - show us what we see coming back from NASA space probes and Hubble shots. Less Babylon 5, please, and more Blue Planet/Sky at Night!
I want to play this NOW. Hell, you could stick one single solitary planet in an exe, release it, and I guarantee you I'd spend the next month of my life just flying around the planet with a huge grin on my face. Or how about a solar system, guys? Guys?? Please???
Definitely like to see some thing like that, just a single planet, maybe a moon and a station
and a single ship to fly around in,no trading no combat.Just a taste of the game.
and a single ship to fly around in,no trading no combat.Just a taste of the game.
Absolutely. If nothing else it would give us an idea of the hardware specs needed to run the thing. How long has this been in development now? And they've only ever released a combat prototype?
Let us play on one or more of your shiny worlds, dagnabit!
I believe at one time that was how Infinity was going to sustain its long dev cycle was the licensing of it's engine. Wonder if that is still true, and I hope InfinityAdmin gives the poor indie dev a break on the cost. I do kinda like what Unreal did with the UDK and giving it away and just taking a cut of your game sales. I would love too see tons of games using the I-Novae engine.
Would be nice to see the devs release a sector with a few planets in a small demo for people to play with to get a feel for the game mechanics and system specs needed for smooth play. Only time will tell 🙂
For any one who wants a game engine or game development enviornment i suggest "Blender" it is a cross platform 3D modeling tool that is freeware, you do not need to know any type of computer programming to make proficient 3D computer games, however it does have the option of using python, everything is built right in and there are tons of tutorials on how to use it on youtube and the rest of the world wide web. Bravo to the designers on Infinity good luck and i will be looking forward to playing it when you are finnished with it. It is a tough task to make a game as good as or better than Elite that game was way ahead of its time. Its a shame it's creators have had a dispute that ended the series.
I have found that Blender3D has been hard for me to use in the past and I didn't think their game engine piece was documented to well (at the time I was playing with it). But I plan to revisit Blender3D when they hit 2.5(2.6) official release and out of beta. I do have a Blender for Dummies book that I should sit down with and learn huh, because it does touch on animation near the end and does talk about the game engine.
I would like to see what I-Novae engine has for world tools and how easy it is to create and get up and running. I think my flaws are that I don't have enough knowledge to actually take an idea and do something with it 🙂
These screenshots look really nice! 😯
I hope they get around to making a game out of it!
