To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hello there!

After aimlessly drifting through space (aka the WWW) I've come across this neat forums and hope I'll find here what I'm looking for.

First of, I'm not your usual sci-fi geek, but just someone enjoying a good sci-fi movie like Alien or Babylon 5 and who has an interest in physics (aerodynamics) and astronomy.

Despite enjoying the above mentioned, I so far stuck to classic RPG games (online as well as offline) along-side strategy and jump'n runs or (action/graphic) adventures.

However, I'm not completely alien to the odd sci-fi game.

I loved playing the Phantasy Star series games, specially Phantasy Star Online and also tried myself on the good old Star Fox FX. A week ago I stumbled upon an old game named DarkStar One which got me hooked and made me want to play other games like it.

I looked around a bit but either the games were too difficult in their controls or my system simply wasn't good enough to run them.

So I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good game like DarkStar One, which has more mining/building in it,has similar controls and runs on older systems.

I tried Evochron Mercenary and already failed at the tutorial as it's dry as hell and the controls aren't flexible enough so I could play it on a laptop. When I tried Miner Wars 2081 it looked pretty nice but the gameplay was rubbish. I also am currently testing Vendetta Online, but I'm not sure about it.

I saw some reviews of EVE Online and it seemed interesting, but when I saw gameplay videos, the battles seemed rather a lot of clicking through menus rather than straight forward aim and shoot action.

If anyone has suggestions I'll greatly appreciate it!

PS: Doesn't matter if it's mmo or a single player game, but has to be either PC or PS 1-3.

Cheers!

Hey mate and welcome to our little corner of the universe 🙂

I do have a suggestion for you but it's more combat oriented rather than mining, it's an outstanding game called "Freelancer" and it's basically what Darkstar One was based on I believe. Freelancer is pretty much my all time favorite game of this genre out there and controls don't really get much easier than that.  If you wish you can play the original version (as I had like a dozen times already hehe) or you can download a mod that improves the graphics (models / textures / resolution) or any other mod out there that you feel like using. In my opinion Freelancer is actually better than Darkstar cause I only played that once and I said I played Freelancer soooo many more times.

Where to get it:  http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xfreelancer&_nkw=freelancer&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Another really really good game I fondly remember of is something called "O.R.B. off-world resource base". This one is more of a strategy game but if you haven't tried it and have the time for it I'd say you give it a try. I remember I played this for an entire summer back in the day hehe. Even by today's standards the graphics on this thing are still very good, least in my opinion.

Hi there!

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, I'll check them out later.

Generally I don't mind if it's older games as long as it's not 2D sprites x']

As for the controls: I don't mind having loads of controls. What I dislike is if I can't customize them to make them fit my laptop keyboard. E.g.: when games have locked ALT or CTRL keys so I can't set up my own key controls. Evochron Mercenary was one of those, and the dev I talked to seemed rather tight up about it when I suggested giving more flexibility to users in regards to the controls, telling me to stop playing the game. (Marketing skills ftw! x'D )

Strategy, as well as rpgs, bore me as of late as that's been what I've been playing for 25years. But I shall take a look at the second game and see what it's like.

Thanks again! :]

Welcome aboard!!!! If you liked D1, you should try "Galaxy of Fire 2".( http://store.steampowered.com/app/212010/  ) It's a very good entry level Space Sim. And since you are interested in aerodynamics and astronomy you should check "Orbiter" ( http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/ ), a very detailed freeware space flight sim, and "Kerbal Space Program"  ( https://kerbalspaceprogram.com/

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! I must say that Galaxy on Fire does look rather intriguing as well as orbiter, which I'm downloading right now. Do you happen to know where I can find a demo for GoF2?

Thanks in advance! :3

Welcome to the forums MsOcean.

I think Galaxy on fire works better on the mobiles as you can get the add on for it, the PC version is well how can I say it, a bit crap would be a good description.

Spaceforce would be worth a look and Star Point Gemini, the second one is due out soon and is already on Steams early access.

Also X Rebirth if you can get it to work.

Hi there! :]

Thanks for the additional suggestions! Since I don't have a smart/i-phone, it doesn't really phase me how much better a game may be on those :]

As for Star Point Gemini, I doubt they will support older systems and I don't have the means nor the enthusiasm to upgrade and use my desktop again.. ._."

So much more comfy sitting in bed with the lappy x']

Dangerous http://whoisdangerous.com/ is a good one not as pretty as GOF2 but has more to it also you might want to have a look at Drifter http://celsiusgs.com/drifter/ both should work fine on a laptop.

Thanks once more! Do you happen to know if there are demos for the games and if so, where to find them?

Cheers!

Dangerous used to have one but just looking at the forum it looks like the game has not been updated for a while or even if the game is still available.

Don't think Drifter has one as the game is still a work in progress but you can always ask CGSColin about it here. http://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/topic/2677-drifter-for-pcmac-and-linux/

'Sup MsOcean.  Your post is a mirror of my PC space sim gaming exploitations/explorations (my hand-eye coordination abilities are  insufficient for the console gamepads).

Searching for games is like scanning for a sand pebble in multiple galaxies.

Try Star wars Combine  http://www.swcombine.com/members/   It's nothing like  DarkStar One though.  It's emphasis is strictly roleplay, but you may enjoy the community and technologies.

Are you also signed up and waiting for the launch of Chris Robert's Star Citizen scheduled to launch next  year?

Nice meeting you, and I'll talk2ya soon.

good to see people are selective in who they say hello to lol

Thanks for the suggestion, but as mentioned i'm not interested in rpg style games anymore and after taking a look at the game info alone i can tell it's not what would interest me.
