To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hector echo lima lima oscar! 😀 my new salty space dog amigo`s. I know I've been on the radar a while now but thought id take the chance to hail the crew.

Right, bit about me and my gaming prudentials...........Im 31 and live in Wakefield in Yorkshire England, I've been crazy about space sims since my Commodore 64 back in the day and Amiga, a fantastic machine that just added magic and atmosphere to space games.

I remember seeing Frontier Elite II on the front page of an amiga magazine and it instantly caught my eye so i had a sneaky read before the newsagent, a grumpy old guy who used to shout at people for just flicking through shouted "its not a bloody library pay for it or put it back!" ...WOW i thought, you can do all that in one game!!! and i get to have a proper look because there's a demo disk on the cover too! so i took out my pocket money and bought it.when i got home i fired up my amiga and eagerly ripped off the disk from the mag and put it in the drive a few moments later the David Brabens name flashed up then gameteks banner (tight gits, leave our dave alone to make elite 4!!) :geek: and then the music started and the imperial ship swung into view................i was mesmerised!!!!!!!!!! the beautiful planetary landings, city's, mining, space stations, free roam do what you want when you want, trading, space fighting, pirating amazingness that is FRONTIER ELITE II 😯 .

I bought it on the release day and was rudely advised by one of the stores staff not to because "its crap anyway and its riddled with bugs, every one who buys it brings it back for a refund" (crap???!Idiot!!!! 👿 ).I was shocked but not perturbed and took it home.

And yes it was buggy 😥 but i fell in love with it 😛 . i spent weeks and weeks in my cockpit made from dining chairs and blankets trading, fighting, and living the dream of having my own ship and exploring space whist eating my meals from a tray on my lap until my parents finally decided to drag me out and make me bathe and `go outside for a while`. 😳 😆

And thats that, i came of age got interested in the fairer of the species moved on to consoles years after my amiga finally croaked and played the excellent wing commander series on PS1 if my memory serves my correctly but was never satisfied.after starting a family and settling down my passion for the genre came back and I've been searching for a ELITE replacement ever since that's how, when i googled elite 2 i found this epic little gem of a sight and discovered FFE3D and our most honourable Darkone got me up and going again! didn't realise the amount of fantastic space games there where till i started reading peoples posts and scanning through the download section!!!! 😯 😯

anyhoooo ive rambled on long enough and the missus has just poked her head through my blanket cockpit and told me we have to go to the supermarket. 😆 😆 😆

so again... A BIG HI to all the guys and catch you on the forums later byeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀

Hi Gunsmif

Welcome to the SSC. Yes Elite 2 was something wasn't it? The present rumour mill that is the Frontier forum,

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=824

suggests we are finally into the decade that will see Elite 4 released. So keep watching! Also the blankets might come in handy for those high gee escapes from hostile starports. Good Thinking! 😉

This was me as well on the C64, the day of the 5 1/4 disks 🙂

Rest up at SSC and go back out into the vastness of space, don't forget to drop a nav bouy to find your way back.

If we don't, you can safely say it won't ever happen.

You are probably right about that. On the other hand, they did bring back Speed Racer, and the Team America movie was a knockoff of The Thunderbirds, Supercar, and Fireball XL-5. I don't know how old those series are, but they are pre-Star Trek (TOS).

The fact that somebody is even discussing a sequel to a game from the Commodore/Amiga era is impressive in itself. I don't see anyone talking about making a new version of WordStar or VisiCalc !

Never say "never"!

PS: Here's a picture of the Commodore C/64 motherboard. The long chip in the top center is the CPU, the mighty MOS 6510 1 Mhz, 8-bit processor. Without even considering advances in architecture, a modest dual-core 2.5 Ghz chip handles 40,000 times the number of bits per second. And a 4 Ghz Quad Core chip handles 128,000 times the number of bits per second of the C/64's CPU.

[hsimg] [/hsimg]

If you count advances in architecture, the compute horsepower of today's CPU's have more than a million times the performance of the C/64's chip (while still in the ballpark of the Commodore's $600 list price). Double that performance if you add a high-end video card.

The increased horsepower make today's games prettier... but are they any more fun?
