To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hello,

I'm new to space games, I recently got into the Elite: Dangerous beta and this is a whole new experience for me. I can see myself playing this kind of game a lot in the future.

I used to be mainly a PC gamer growing up but somewhere along the way I also got into console gaming. When World of Warcraft came out I played that and only that for several years and when the game changed too much I quit. After that I was burned out with gaming and now several years later I'm finally kind of getting back into it.

Favourite genres for me are RPGs (both Japanese and western, my favourite is the Dragon Quest series), Life Simulation (like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon), MMOs (Right now I'm playing ArcheAge on and off). I guess games that are close and personal, so no strategy game (besides tactical games since they often focus on a smaller cast of characters) and games that are really slow paced or even turn based (since my reflexes suck, I'm a very slow person), so no shooters or fighting games. I'm very fond of having a lot of numbers and stats to tweak and increase in games and I seldom get hooked on adventure games for that reason.

In space games my main interest is games that let me trade and explore. Besides that I guess I just want to gaze at the stars and dream about distant worlds. I'm a bit corny like that.

Games I'm looking forward to playing are:

Elite: Dangerous

Star Citizen

No Man's Sky

Infinite Space (which is already out for the DS since several years but I haven't gotten it yet)

I'd be very happy if someone could recommend me a game which is a little lighter/more arcady (than Elite: Dangerous beta, a different itch) but still has both exploration and trading.

Thanks!

Regards,

Spluffen

Welcome Spluffen!

Yes, I too am useless at FPS-style games because my reflexes suck, but I find that space sims have just the right mix of reflexes, stats, and strategy to keep me happy. Plus there's the joys of a whole galaxy to explore 🙂

You could try Vendetta Online; it's pretty much my 'go to' game these days (other than a little War Thunder and Terraria, occasionally... I have dabbled in Istaria and Dragon Nest also).

The videos give a demonstration of trading mechanics in VO's dynamic market.  As far as exploring distant worlds, Vendetta Online really is a world unto itself; there are planets, but you can't go there (yet).  The devs have hinted that one day we may be able to, so long as there is a compelling gameplay reason for it.  You can learn more about this on the Kickstarter page:

...and also on the VO wiki

Welcome to the forums Spluffin.

Drifter might interest you although it's far from finished, you can get it through Steam or from their website. http://www.celsiusgs.com/drifter/

Thanks everyone! I appreciate it. I will check out all your recommendations. I already had my eye on Drifter but I had no idea it was also available on PC, which makes things a lot easier.

I hope to talk to you more in the forum and discover this for me new genre of games.
