To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hi my nick is SuperG a short form of SuperGoofy. 🙂

I ' am also a scifi fan, movies and TV shows.

in favo order

1 FireFly

2 Stargate Sg1

3 Stargate SgA

4 Voyager

5 BSG remake // it's bit to dark drama

SGU is a runner up. Depends how the drama humor aktion balance turn out. I prefere Exploration humor aktion and a bit functional natural drama. Firefly got most of it right. SGU is bit to much but can beat BSG maybe. We'ill see!

Space sims.

My first was? My memory is a bit bad on that. A Privateer or Wingcommander game. Did like Homeworld series to.

Freelancer and now the Xserires from X2 The Treat to X3TC 2.5. Nexus and Universalcombat didn't make it.

In a C++ Game programming book I notice Startrek Fleet commander game. It was already a old game. But in the book context it draw my attention. The gameplay was nice. And yet again a game I missed wenn it was fresh. Like whole Elite series missed me. Wonder what I was doing in those day's?

My gaming background was Atari 2600. Then Z80 ZX81 but didn't get to gaming on that. Then nothing Till PC 80386S 25Mhz. First PC game was F19 Stealth fighter.

So First a lot Flight combat Sim then lot FPS then lots of RTS games. Or I discovered space sims before RTS wenn was Dune? Latest RPGFPS or in third person. My first RPG was Mass effect.

I'am more of a slow pace gamer. So minimal a (heavy shielded) Heavy fighter. But go fast to something bigger. So I prefere Capitalship games. And not dogfighting combat. That more something out my past wenn I was fast.

Didn't experience real physics space sims. So I not sure if I would like that! Do more Singleplayer. Coöp is also a option I realy like. Online that not me. MMO totaly don't care about that.

So my latest game by lack of alternatives is X3 Terran Conflict 2,5. It's not a sim but it's entertaining.

As a kid in my Atari fase I was a console kiddy. But becoming a adult, I become a PC gamer. Still are so a veteran PC gamer. But lately within a year I have all current consoles to. except something called Nintendo DS series.

Coöp now mostly done splitscreen, instead in Home LAN have two now for a few years. Kabel and ADSL

Prefere PC for complex Space sims. And genres PC excels in.

Would be cool to do a flyby like in X3TC but then where 3D vision works. X3 doesn't support it.

First thing I did wenn I fireup X2 the treat. Realy close flyby, like movie topgun. Those Capital are huge. 🙂

Also because of the lack of big titels in this genre. And being interrested in game programming for a long time. At least Somewhere from my RTS fase. I 'am interrested in making my own Space sim. But no time and to lazy. Made first baby step. Getting in a concept fase. For a small one man project. A novice programmer could handle.

So that me.

SG

Hey SuperG

Welcome to SSC, glad you found this outpost in the vastness of space. 😉

The Privateer and Wing Commander games were some of my first games I played on my Amiga 500. I too like a great single player experience and have yet to play a space themed MMO that has what I want in a game. EVE did ok but need more action.

I have been wanting to make a game for ages and just not sure where to start. I have no real programming background and need to get that first I guess.

I played privateer and WC on PC. So long time ago. 🙂

Programming. My tast of that:

My first as a kid, some Basic tyout on my home ZX81 ( Z80 )

Years after that, I did get a tast of Machine code z80 in hex form. And ASM for 6800 based Controllers in my Electronic education fase. . But that still was to long ago.

Our first PC a 80386. Then I got the hands on Turbo pascal I made some DOS utilities for personal use. With windows it lost it uses.

Then I fiddle around with C++ wenn DirectX2 get out on c++ game books examples.

C++ is defacto standard for the industrie. But not a nice language to step into game programming from a novice point of view. But that the past. That barely bit of experience has eroded over time.

My very fresh new language of interrest is C# With XNA.

C++ still got my atention as my interrest for DX11.

But for big idea's I'am also lokin into Total conversion.

XNA & C# stand high on my direction preference.

Total conversion, you need be ready with content lools, wich I have not, and no experience with.

DX11 is new tech and to advance to begin with. Didn't get into 3D. Could be a bridge to far.

C# and XNA with it's generic content pipeline give you some headstart.

I think to get started I need to finish something preferly a realy simple game. As a confidence impuls giver.

A "Hello (world) space game "

Hi SuperG

Welcome to the SSC.

If you like those older games like Wing Commander, why not download D-Fend Reloaded. I have been having a good bit of fun with that and have been playing old games I had long since put away. As for the Elite series, it never too late to give it a try, especially so with FFE3D around and available to download on this very forum.
