To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

A man appears, in his early forties!
G'day this is Commander Mick who first trained in Classic Elite in 1986 at the age of 14 from Ipswich, (Near Brisbane) in Queensland, (South Eastern Coast) in Australia (Of course!) on my Commodore 64 ( After combing the computer stores for it. A year after it's release in 1985 and finally finding one copy of it left. I brought it with all my saved up pocket money!)for 3 to 6 years until I attained the Status of "Deadly"! (I never made it to "Elite" as I didn't get any more missions offered to me after completing the "Constrictor" one. Was there a trick to this, getting more missions? Was there a special place you had to travel to to get the other missions? I assume that you had to complete other missions before reaching the status of "Elite"?) Since then I had lost my original floppy CD for the game and a essential component for my C64 and haven't played since.
I also played <a href=" Tau-Ceti which I experimented with for a small while, but it still paled in comparison to Elite.
I was never really taken in by Wing-Commander series. Which I had always thought of as a cheap rip-off of Elite that was over padded with live-filmed cut-scenes and more linear gameplay, but in the early 90's I did buy <a href=" Privateer. Which sounded like a more Elite version of Wing-Commander, but was still very limited despite it's 3D full colour graphics.
I also tried <a href=" XF5700 Mantis which turned out to be another cheap rip-off of the original. Plagued by live-filmed cut-scenes, and not being as open ended as Elite. I did atleast complete this game as it was very short. I do beleive that docking in these last too games was just another triggered cut- scene.
I never played any Commodore Amiga 500 or PC version of Elite. (Have I missed anything?)I've never played Elite - Frontier (The same, have I missed anything? I heard it was introduced in 1993, but I was pretty sure I've seen it in stores before the 90's) or Elite - First Encounters. Though, I did download a free version of what I thought was the latter game. Where you start on a planet and then launch your ship. Which has to fly up, and up through the atomosphere into space. When it reached the space window though. It never went any further. I think it was a incomplete version of the code for the game.
I then discovered Oolite in 2006 and downloaded it. However, impressed I was with 3D full colour graphics replacing the now old 3D wireframes. (Those 3D wireframe graphics were great in their own time!) and the other enhancement and mods that could be downloaded for the game. My games of Oolite were short lived (Just the Vanilla version, without any of the Mods!) and never amounted to much due to lack of descent game controller other than the keyboard. I also had had since then changed PC's and forgot about the game.
Until I heard about Elite - Dangerous late last year. I located a website with some information on it, but not much else. So I filed it away in my memory, not actually ever finding out about the Kick-Starter for Elite - Dangerous until about nearly a month ago and that it was successfull and finished. Fortunately, I had found the official site for Elite - Dangerous and that it was still being funded there. Plenty of the limited reward tiers were still available. Though, I am currently not financial enough to back it at the reward I am interested in. I want the Commander Level. To be one of the named Commanders and also a cut away model of the Cobra Mark Three. That's quite a bit of money and quite a bit of money I'm willing to part with. Just a few more weeks. In the mean time I have reacquainted myself with Oolite. Now 1.77 (24 MiB) for Windows XP. It's great with all the enhancements. Extra sounds, a I.D. and Targeting System that talks to you in your personal choice of accent and gender. Docking Clearance protocol! Purchasing other ship. I really can't imgine flying anything other than a Cobra Mark Three. Still without any of the Mods.
I can hardly wait for Elite - Dangerous to come out.
I do hope Elite - Dangerous doesn't ruin anything for Oolite or work on this game.
I want to buy a Joy-Stick (I remember using my old Atari 2600 Joy-Stick with my Commordore 64 for Elite as the official Commordore 64 Joystick broke on me!) or Game-Controller (As they are better known as!) now! Is it possible?
My old man had told me that the popularity of gaming consoles is making Joy-Sticks/Game-Controllers for PC obsolete!
Is this really true?
I sure hope not. I almost think that Frontier Developments or whom ever is working on Elite - Dangerous should design a Joy-Stick/Game-Controller to go with the game. Making it official!
As for my programming, I once learned a bit of B.A.S.I.C. on my Commodore 64, (Just "Goto", "Print", "Peek","Poke", Though, I don't recall it much these days! I once copied Jeff Minter's program instuctions for one of his games "Rox Deluxe"!) but never Machine Code. I'm not that clever 😉
Boarding Cobra Mark Three for take off....
Welcome to SSC, Mick - there are some excellent eye-candy mods for Oolite, btw.
Commander Mick stops just before boarding his Cobra Mark Three and turns back around to regard Cody.....
About Oolite....
I'm thinking of starting with with the BSG Mod!
I was impressed with their new graphic effects for Witchspace transit and docking.
What do you reckon?
A good on to start to with?
BTW, I have also docked with the Oolite forums accessed through the Oolite Wiki and noticed you or someone like you were there as well. I have yet neglected to properly introduce myself over there as yet.
Stepping back into the doorway of his Cobra Mark Three, but still awaiting another reply.....
For immersion, BGS is a must-have - as are Griff's shipset, Povray Planets, and Random Ship Names. There are others, of course.
And yes - I am the same Cody you know from the Oolite forum.
Still standing in the entrance of his ship. Commander Mick replied...
Thanks, I may look at those other Mods as well. I've also just downloaded Vega Strike and installing it right at this moment. Is it another cheap rip of Elite or what?
Anyway, what I'm really here about is the FFE-D3D download. Could you please direct me or link me to it?
His hand hovered over the closing mechanism of the door....
Commander Mick? Haven't I saw you someplace before? :girlcrazy: Welcome to the SSC! :girlwink:
At that moment the ships computer announced that it had located the intended download and had started the download itself....
Commander Mick then said "Thank you, for your time, but I have other places to be and other things to do, but I will return!" and with that he disappeared shutting the hatch behind him.
Pretty soon after, the ship's engines ignited as the berth unlocked it and it lifted off....
Bound for other places.
Incoming Message.......
Hello Geraldine, sorry to have missed you there.....
That was me who you told to dock at bay four on Frontier Forums.
I'm currently making my way through the first request list for Elite - Dangerous. I have some ideas for that game and I see that some of those ideas have actually made into the Oolite Mods. It would seem that they were popular ideas. Hopefully, Frontier Developments will be looking closely at Oolite and it's Mods to see what is worth implementing into the new game.
Damn Vega Strike doesn't seem to go at all and this reversed made 3D version of Elite: First Encounters goes, a little bit, but freezes and goes unresponsive before shutting down at the title screen. I will try it again later when I have less stuff running on the computer. It's probably just Random Access Memory issues.

No the 16bit version of Elite were pretty much like the the 8 bit version except with filled in graphics only the Archimedes version is different as it was built from the ground up.
Yes you did miss out as Frontier added more but is very different from Elite and it came out in 1993 making it 20 years old next month IIRC.
My old man had told me that the popularity of gaming consoles is making Joy-Sticks/Game-Controllers for PC obsolete!

Yes and no, you can still buy them but joypads seem to have become the default control option now.
Hopefully, Frontier Developments will be looking closely at Oolite and it's Mods to see what is worth implementing into the new game.
It's been my opinion for quite some time that (amongst other things) Oolite, Pioneer and JJFFE/FFE3D helped provide the necessary encouragement to Frontier Developments to begin to seriously consider bringing Elite Dangerous out of the shadows. These games kept the Elite flame burning during the dark times. I am also pretty sure all those games have graced the PC screens at Frontier Developments at one time or another. :girlwink:

<nods> Didn't we do well, eh? <buffs fingernails>
Well the way I look at it is like this, each of the games can stress different things to the Frontier devs, Oolite has endless possibilities for content thanks to its oxp model, Pioneer shows how procedural generation can work in a modern game with a realistic galactic model and FFE3D (being the only one of the 3 still based on Braben code) shows how even the original game can be improved thanks to the dedicated work of coders within the Elite community. And all that before taking into account they are all great fun to play too! :girlcrazy:
Incomming Message......
Greetings Pinback,
I apologise for my abrupt departure,
but.....
I managed to get as far as the screen where I appear to be on planetary spaceport. On the ground in Elite: First Encounters. I can change the screen to a local star chart and what I remember to be a list of local commodities. Though can't do anything to get beyond this stage. This version of the game does appear to be a little broken.
I also - as I mentioned earlier - couldn't get the vanilla version of Vega Strike to work at all. I click on the icon provided and nothing happens at all. I downloaded it by itself, so is there anything I missed? It could either be missing a essential patch or it just doesn't run with my current computer. It's uses Windows 7.
Can anyone assist me here?

Icons and start up are different to Frontier have a look here for a guide. http://www.lotf.co.uk/qsg.shtml
As for Vega Strike have you checked their site http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/ been an age since I looked at Strike, looks like it has change a lot.
