To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Finally got around to installing Win7 Pro on my machine and have to admit install was a breeze and it found everything in my PC and installed the drivers for it all was actually impressed. Still getting used to the feel of Win7 over XP but overall seems stable enough. Over the next few weeks I will go through a lot of my games and test it on Win7. Anyone have any good sites they can send me to, to get the most out of WIn7?

I have noticed that running 64bit Win7 does seem a bit snappier in responsiveness now it's hunting for the 64bit apps to take advantage of the CPU.

I loathed Vista, so I'm kinda gun-shy about Windoze 7. Generally Micro$oft comes out with a stable OS every 3 releases. I hear Windoze 7 is a processor hog and needs loads of RAM.

Yeah I'm in the same boat as Shingen. I've got a dual boot setup here, 32 bit XP and 64 bit Vista. Nothing but issues with Vista, I never use it anymore. I figured I should give MS another year to work out all the kinks with 7 before I install it over my vista partition. Then again, what do I have to lose? It can't be worse than Vista.

Tell me D1, how would you compare/contrast it to Vista? Also, when you hit control/alt/delete, how many processes does it show you've got running in the background? And are there any more "run as administrator" problems with 7?

Shant - I'm doing all my music work in Windows 7, it's flawless. I haven't had a single problem with it yet. Best upgrade I ever made. If you're running Windows 7 in 64-bit with 6-8 GB of RAM and a quad-core processor, you have a beast of a machine.

Having said that, I think Win 7 would be just as smooth running on a lot less. It's a great piece of software.

This being said, I also thought that post Service Pack Vista was pretty solid, especially if you tweak a bunch of the settings and turn off stuff like Superfetch and Readyboost and System Restore (risky, but not if you backup every week like I do...)

Finally, the annoying popups and User Account Control issues can all be switched off very easily.

Basically, Windows 7 LOOKS like Vista but FEELS like XP, which is a great combo.

I got Windows 7 few weeks ago, installed it on my desktop pc and I'm impressed ! So far I had XP but I never quite loved XP cause of the way the system would "slow down" if you didn't maintain it on a steady basis. My brother has Vista on his laptop and I gotta say, my opinion ... it sucks. So in a few short words, I like XP, I hate Vista and I love 7. It's so smooth and easy to use and it's stable, I haven't had a single issue with it since I got it and I'm the kind of guy that "rapes" his pc every day, I don't just check my e-mails and chat on messenger.

I have enjoyed it as well, my only complaint and it's probably with Firefox really is that you can tell from my earlier screenshots that FF3.5 was sucking up a lot of memory running Win7 64bit. Outside of that system runs very smoothly, haven't tried many of the older space games on it yet but will eventually. I was actually thinking about starting a Win7 space game compatibility list for folks to leave their feedback on how they got games running in Win7.

That's a great idea, something that will come in handy for everyone making the jump to win7.
