To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Anyone here ever play SWAT 3? In my opinion, it's the greatest tactical first-person shooter ever. It was released in the late 1990s, and had really good graphics for it's time. The online play was amazing for this game, it was just like Battle.net (the original Battle.net, not Battle.net 2.0 which StarCraft II uses), with chat rooms, clans, custom games, and a lot of other features that Battle.net has. Sadly the online play was shutdown when Activision purchased and subsequently shutdown Sierra Entertainment in 2008-2009. The game is also heavily modifiable. There were custom maps, custom skins, custom weapons, and hundreds of modifications of every kind.
I remember playing this game all the time back in the early and middle 2000s. I was really disappointed when Activision announced that they were shutting down the servers, despite the game still having a lot of players online still. A few people managed to set up Hamachi matches on it after the shutdown, but two of the largest fansites, which hosted all of the custom mods both shutdown (hot-swat-mods.com and 10-david.com). Sierra also released a sequel, SWAT 4, but a lot of SWAT 3 fans didn't like SWAT 4 since they changed the gameplay and made it more of a normal FPS game, instead of a tactical FPS game. So has anyone else here ever played this game? Below is a video I found on YouTube of someone playing a single player mission of the game:
I played 3 while waiting for 4, unfortunately I never grasped the controls ( I borrowed it from a friend.) I beat the heck out of 4. Kind of a shame 4 was so short. Great game tho, and imho better then the R6 series. (I loved taking them alive.)
Never played the Swat games.
When it comes to Real time tactical squad based game my two fav so far are Hidden and Dangerous 2 and Commander 2 love setting up ambushes in both games. 😀
Never tried hidden and dangerous 2. The SWAT series had a rediculous amount of replay value however. You could have it 'randomize' a mission, where terrorists or whatnot would be placed randomly. For instance, in one mission in S.W.A.T. 4, you have to break into a house, confront a serial killers mother. (I usually maced her, then cuffed her.) and confront the young man as well as rescuing the girl he has hidden in the basement pantry. Sometimes, you'd go down, and she'd be gone, because he has just returned and she is near the car. Or, even worse, he's dragged her into the little cubby he has dug out, and is about to 'work' on her.
Obviously Ive taken some 'artisitic' liberties in my explanation, but it moves everything around so that you don't know whats what. Like the mother not being in the house, but outside (presumably smoking.) It was one of my favorite features of the game. NOTHING is as intense as staring down a highway sniper, and screaming 'get on the ground' (.. or rather pressing the hotkey as fast as you can.) While watching wether the man is going to raise that rifle at you.
Produced with actual swat input, I found the games to be TOP notch.
HIdden and Dangerous 2 is pretty cheap now from what I hear. Can't see that much replayability from watching the youtube videos however.

maybe not in the sense of randomized objectives but most of the level are very large and how you approach objectives is up to you ether going in stealthy or run in guns blazing, also which equipment you equip the squad with plays a part and vehicles can be used in the game.should still be a demo lurking about some where for it.
