To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Alpha5 (really does fix lots of crashing this time... 😉

Hi people, I've made a new alpha of pioneer, since the last was very buggy. If you experienced lots of random in-game crashes with alpha4 then you should have more luck with alpha5:

http://pioneerspacesim.net/download

Changes since alpha 4:

* Autopilot will now fly around planets instead of plowing into them

* Some more new ships

* Improved error reporting for model and shader development.

* Faster framerate in cities, particularly when shaders are enabled.

* Fixed annoying disappearing terrain glitch

* Reduced field of view from 90 to 83 degrees

* Fixed random in-game crashes caused when ambient sounds are started

* Fixed crashes on startup when models contain lots of obj files

* More city models

Mostly a bug fix release since alpha4 was so buggy 😉

Next on my coding plate for alpha 6 is to get NPC ships spawning and entering and leaving systems, and a mission (perhaps assassination) to test this with.

Awesome 😀 i can now play this game without crashing like every 5 seconds XD Great job. *Gives cake* One note. It would be really cool if you could make a Autopilot function to land on planets 😀

Thanks tomm, it works (sadly, without shader). I have Athlon64 2 GHz and game is SLOW. What kind of processor's speed is recommended?

Higher framerate within range of cities confirmed. Alpha 5 runs much smoother than 4 on my machine. Never had a problem with the framerate, only with cities on very high detail and now I can even run that at an acceptable framerate.

traffic seems to be highest here,

so i put my models wip here

p66 models wip3

you need to delete the models folder completely before you paste everything over to the pioneer folder, then it should work. buildings limited and scaled so it gives a good blend from "high" upwards.

"restricted" ships, for a somewhat better performance, fixed pos. lights 😳 .

pre-installed mod enabler to exchange (enable) various ships, make the eye become a ladybird, police never was better armed.

CTRL-F12 can be fun now, when pressed 5 or 10 times...

includes a "heavy" pirates module (optional, if you like to meet two couriers and a lanner at once).

most ships lost some feathers, e.g. the lanner, courier and the eagles use no more optional skins.

but you can still use your old models of course, just exchange the whole folder, maybe you have to update the model in the mods folder to if it touches one of them, but the new scripts should work with a old model (uses the same textures and models in general, disable mods in advance if you change a ship).

some ship versions can be exchanged from within their own folders (panther, boa, both have a altered spec by me, boa has been fit to size in relation to panther and range with class 7).

ladybird and interdictor are exchanged properly when mod is enabled/disabled.

other "pioneer" ships have to be installed via mod enabler, thus to make disabling possible.

stardust not included, since that ship needs thrusters and posl., some small extras have to be attached and the pilot/cockpit is missing (not so important). at least no landing gear needed, the ship lands on it's vertical thrusters (if at all 😉 ).

Lots of crashing has indeed been fixed..Cheers 😎

As always ive got a billion suggestions so ill offer none, it seems work is progressing well on this and its becoming more playable with each release. Do you need any text based contributions - mainly system descriptions? If so id be happy to write some. Thx again for an excellent effort 🙂

ezelite,

yes, i can only force you to do it.

you can either edit the source yourself or post the system descriptions to tomm at his site

the link is http://pioneerspacesim.net/contribute

there you wil find tomms mail adress to contribute your work and/or the link to the source code.

pioneer is a community project and i guess any help is appreciated

mostly i'm outlasted with my models, but some text based stuff is really needed

a gazeteer or equal would be fine to, we could link some missions or quest to it, if i have the time for it i could maybe get a little deeper into scripting modules for pioneer.

but don't expect to much this is "terra incognita" for me and i have to learn how everything works.

but once you started it's not to complicated i guess (a big fun and very satisfying to see your own scripts working in a game).

check the developers wiki if you like to get into scripting such yourself

start with simple alternations of existing scripts like i did with the deliver package script, this will help to understand how the pioneer lua api works and what can be done with it.

mainly a lot, you can request most of what is going on the back of the game and use it in your script

i.e. players or any "bodies" values such as actual or destinations systems coordinates or lawlessness (which i used in the current deliver package script).

spawn ships at a given timepoint with given power and many more.

like i said i have to get more tight with that myself.

if i'm in the mood for it i will start to make more of them, once i created some scenarios for RRTycoon2, i guess i spent 3 month's of intense scripting for only two completed scenarios (phew). while some friends of mine was wondering what i've been doing each day sometimes not even eating a bite (in fact partially i was working on my FE2 wormhole database then to).

I know the galaxy generator isn't about accuracy, but still... seeing Sirius as a white giant puts every hobby astronomer off somewhat. It should be a white dwarf. I.e. hot, but veeeeery dim (low luminosity).

Hmm..., well I'm no hobby astronomer but I always thought Sirius is a lot brighter than our own sun and at least 2x bigger. It's the most luminous neighbouring star as seen from the earth so why should it be dim? Are you talking about Sirius A or Sirius B?

I'm not allknowing so I just looked it up with google and found a website stating Sirius A is 25x more luminous than our sun and twice as big. It is a type A star and is thus classified as a between Sub Giant and Giant.

Of course, that doesn't mean the information Pioneer gives you is totally correct but I think it's quite normal that the random procedurally generated engine makes these things up and that the Sirius star in Pioneer is not even that far off from reality. Sirius A is stated by Pioneer as 3.17 x the size of our sun and Sirius B is classified as a white dwarf star so I'm not sure why you should not be content with it. But as I said, I'm not a hobby astronomer so correct me if I'm wrong 😉 .

Apologies... My cropped down catalogue didn't contain the parent star. I really have to rewrite that parser.

It *is* a dwarf (main sequence) type A star. I actually haven't implemented giants yet, although the main sequence type O stars are pretty big.

I'm sorry for the confusion. The fault lies with me. I parsed the HYG-database for another project, and threw out the close binaries because I couldn't use them in my project (yet), just that in the case of Sirius, the parent was thrown out instead of the companion. So I was of the wrong impression that sirius was an O VI (aka white dwarf, which confusingly is not main sequence, who are generally called dwarfs, but a stellar remnant), because the parent didn't show up in my Map. So, in a way Pioneer just help me to fix another mistake in my own project, that strangely enough no one has pointed out to me yet... thanks.

Every human makes mistakes. Especially when a program/database gives you the wrong information 😀 . I'm curious, what project are you working on? Astronomy software? I like Stellarium myself. Easy to use, graphically nice and free for download.

orbiter seems to be absolutely cool...

if i only had the time 😉

i sniffed once a little to models made for it...

...and was amazed about all the brilliant work.

fortunately humans makes mistakes...

...else a lot that we won't miss in our daily life wouldn't exist

and it's not only earl grey tea i'm thinking of.

Trust me, Orbiter is worth the time. You really should give it a try.

There are tons of worthwhile addons for it too, so you can customize it to your tastes.

i'm shure

but man, i'm unemployed and didn't find enough time for all that i have in mind for pioneer,

how can i find then only five minutes for orbiter?

actually i didn't play often, pioneer of course but also not a hour in the past two weeks, but else maybe a fast little old game

where i don't have to "get into it", like galaga or such.

ok, i shouldn't write so many and long articles here, but that's part of pioneer, imo.

collecting ideas, and emitting knowledge to others is also important.

i collected one yesterday frontier forums, wait...

Greetings!

I was thinking about some VERY important new feature that should be implemented into the game:

- Social standing and reputation points (individual and planet wide rating).

Level 1: Personal level (green bar - or points shown on the screen while interacting)

----> By that I mean that you should be able to make friends and enemies galaxy wide which should have massive influence on both individual trading possibilities and the abilities to get important information. Also the personal communication with "aliens" on other star systems will have some impact on your future social interaction on that planet or with those individuals.

Imagine: you know the cantina scene from Star Wars? You see that being a newbie in that cantina makes it hard for Luke to be accepted and to get any information at all. It can even be dangerous. If he was well known and had something like one "friend" or "good friend" under all those evil guys in that cantina things would have gone far better. Positive interaction on individual level should be somehow remembered so that you should be able to make friends and close friends and best friends or (on perhaps some kind of man/women level) some intimate relationship which should enable you to get access to some guilds, privileges or secrets - or simply the needed hyper-drive or droids you are looking for.

"The sims" is the best example for the idea I have. It does not need to be that detailed. But bribing someone or making regular good business with one and the same person on some planet should somehow have a positive influence. Also getting known to some sexy alien women is somehow interesting, too

*

Second level: Planet wide social standing

---> This second level is shown as a red bar under the personal level.

It reflects your general standing on that planet based on your behavior like trading illegal goods, fighting or fighting pirates.

--> You should also get some sort of "reputation" which should enhance the individual interaction based on the type of image you have. If you are some aggressive pirate and are labeled as "criminal scum" you could have some good chances to interact positive in all bars and cantinas on some anarchy planets and also be able to make illegal trading much more easily and get illegal goods cheaper. So your Planet wide standing would be "VERY GOOD" on anarchy planets and "very bad" or "wanted" on federal core systems if you are some pirate for example.

You get my idea?

This should not be too complicated to be coded.

Are those programmer-guys even reading here?

PPS: buying slaves and free them on another planet (one thing I always wanted to do) should get you hundreds of "best friends" instantly! And even voters if you are some candidate for a political career. Expensive but effective!

it's not that the idea is completely new to me, but a good one it is.

of course it was ment for elite4

but no one knows if this will ever materialise in our universe

---

i would have a very bad reputation:

extremely dangerous

stay away as far as you can (best in another system)

he's got a nervous finger

contracted to imperial forces, but not reliable

it seems murdering is fun to him

blasts police forces out of the sky in his spacesuit for sport

personal statement:

"freeing slaves, what a stupid idea,

rather i would test my jettison cargo function with them

when i can't sleep, like some counting sheeps..."

---

no, of course i had my times playing the "hero" in frontier...

but it's far less fun 😆

even when i think blasting that poor skeet cruiser on ffe's start is boring

he has no chance, that's no good fight

i will have to test the april the 1st. "easter egg" marcel told me he experienced once in fe2

that sounds like a good fun to me, hundrets of ships, great!

I tend to play the hero, get the girl or in this case the ship, then turn on the galaxy 😈

But thats FFE where there is a 'ship' to get 😉

In frontier, the few times I have played it (as I was a diehard FFE fan) I would just trade till I could get a decent explorer type ship then head out and find new wormholes to the center of the galaxy 🙂

marcel wrote in FE2 thread here,

I thought I'd share a FE2 moment from many years ago. I jumped into a system, I can't remember which, but it had a red or orange sun. I looked behind me and saw an asteroid field, or many reddish objects against the stars. After a bit I picked out the ship ID of a pirate, then another, then another, then another... and I realized that the entire "asteroid" field was composed entirely of pirate ships! 😮 As the young Carl Sagan once said, "There must have been hundreds and hundreds of them! I swear, I hadn't done anything to piss anyone off, but there they were! Then I looked at the game date. It was April 1st! Easter egg? Coincidence? I don't know, but it happened, and sorry but I don't have a save game.
