To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hi All,
Just built from git source today, looking really nice!
Configured the joystick, but found that pulling back on the stick caused me to dive instead of climb. Using a Logitech Attack 3 on Ubuntu Lucid BTW.
Am I being insane, or is this a bug?
Regards,
Ian.
I'm the guy who wrote the joystick code. With my joystick (CH combatstick) the defaults were OK, not sure if this is the same for every joystick; I wonder which way is more prevalent. For now, you can go to the options screen with key mappings, and remap the pitch axis by moving the joystick in the right direction.
Ah, good idea, didn't think to try that, cheers!
Ian
Unavowed, would you please tell me how to set up my joystick for Pioneer? I have a Saitek X45 and can set up profiles for games, but I don't see a joystick option in the key mappings options screen. Thanks.
unavowed: thx that fixed it, I must have pulled when I should have pushed 😉
control screen now reports "-Joy 0 Y axis" (others: note the minus sign) for pitch
Ian.
m4r35n357: Great, I'm glad that it works for you. I based this method of axis mapping on how it works in IL-2: Sturmovik. It's quite flexible, but I suppose that it's also somewhat non-intuitive at first.
Marcel: I'm guessing that you're using Alpha 7. Joystick support is a very recent feature, I'm afraid that you have to compile Pioneer yourself from git or wait for Alpha 8 😉
or use the joysticks software?
i play pioneer (like many other games and also good old FE2) with emulated keystrokes on a logitech dualstick.
works best for me and often better as a "built in" joystick control (i thought about to give my new pilot even such a "playstation type" controller, MIB2?).
You could, but then you don't have the fine-grained analogue control that you have when directly using the joystick, or will be able to have in the new version, anyway 😉
hm, yes and no, it works really good for me, i can't tell you why, but the emulated keystrokes on my pad when i use the stick are different much different from simple keystrokes by hand (delayed? i don't know perhaps).
after all i don't know if i would really like a fine graded control on the stick, perhaps it's not as good as some expect.
because in a battle situation i don't act so sensitive, it's a battle and movement's are quick and intense, the stick is mostly moved to the end of scale, personally i don't like to sensitive controls, we will see, maybe i will use later still the emulated keystrokes.
and don't forget we have drag in pioneer, in the beginning i thought to heavy drag, but it seems to be ok.
moving a fully ladden Boa will be still difficult.
and for the game that's ok. what would be the fun if a ASP would move as quick as the Talon fighter? they must have a advantage to the bigger ships, else you would never use them. personally i prefere small fighters, i don't have to carry goods when picking up a mission. the smaller as better.
Actually I'm using alpha 7 and 7.5. Both the keyboard controls screens look like this.

Oh well, I don't mind waiting for alpha 8. 😆
No, with joystick support it should look like this:
Must be more than one version of 7.5 then? Oh well, I'll just wait for alpha 8. Thanks for writing the code! 😀
I was just checking this out but it seems that it won't work with my joystick without some sort of DeadZone support, thats with Win7 which gives you no options at a driver level to set anything like that.
Do you perhaps have any plans to add something like that in, Unavowed?
The price of contributing is eternal maintenance. Joking 😉 Sure, I can write it next weekend. I haven't had the need for a dead zone with my joysticks, but I've seen that many games have support for them, it's a good idea to have it in Pioneer too.
Nice one Unavowed. 🙂 I think its only those of us with lowly gamepads and cheap-o joysticks that will suffer with this.
