To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

So I was fumbling around looking for a commented out part of the UI script that shows some numbers for descent, circular orbit and escape velocity... still can't remember how I did it last time.

But I started playing with the System Display (F2, then F6...) and have found it incredibly useful for intra-system navigation and orbital tricks. Just a few tweaks to make it a bit easier to use and it would be perfect.

Right now I can engage the thrusters and then if I hit F2 at the same time it will keep the thruster engaged while displaying the constantly updated trajectory. Once the trajectory is the way I like it I can hit F1 again to go back to the cockpit (or whatever) view and that also disengages the thruster. A better way to handle this sort of thing would be nice, as well as better view controls in the System Display, duplicated from the external / sidereal camera ideally.

why not make a little  orbital map in HUD ? like a minimap

If I could prioritize things, being able to see the current velocity inside the System Navigation Window (F2 then F6) would be the most helpful for me. I like to set the engine (I give it 10% usually...) and engage time compression from inside the Nav Window and then stop when I've got the trajectory set. Once you've got a more or less straight line to the destination then it's a matter of getting to a cruising speed. I don't like to use set speed except to hover (I'd replace it with an "All Stop" Function, myself...) and it's dangerous in orbital situations.

Actually, now I think about it another indicator in the Nav Window would be very nice, a marker at the point in the trajectory representing the distance it would take to come to a stop...

Sorry, I'm trying to describe these things properly but don't think there is an existing nomenclature for some of it.

Would some MFDs to replace the current panel be worth it? Not just for Navigation but in general...

Heh, actually... even better would be if I could have the orbital information on my phone beside the keyboard! 😛

Yes, that would be great if one could engage thrusters in system navigation window (F2->F6). Or there were a system navigational minimap in HUD.

BTW: there are some "trajectory changing buttons" in the upper right corner of system navigation window, one can change the planed trajectory with them (shown as blue line), but is there an option to fly by that new path? Like a navigational waypoint showing required deltaV and direction in which the ship should burn to get to the new orbit.

It would be useful to be able to burn in the system view, yeah. At least forward/back.

If you set a planned trajectory then there's a marker (blue circle) in the main view that shows the orientation for the burn.
