To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Ship Controls

Hello everyone I'm brand new to Pioneer and these forums and I just had a couple small issues with which I could use some assistance.

First of all: when I hyperspace to a system in order to get to another one further away, I can't hyperspace again. I even turn up the clock and sit in the area for about 2 days. I set a new destination but I get no option to go to hyperspace. In addition, I'm left in the open black, a minimum of 14AU from the nearest planet/station/anything. If I'm lucky and have a station in the system I can open coms and autopilot to a place but that uses ALL the fuel even for a short trip.

Secondly: When in normal space, I got attacked by a fighter. I thought "ok let's dogfight". Instead, I could only sit still and hold my mouse button to move my view around while I tried to hit this other ship like a moron. I've tried thrusters and such but my fighter never seemed to move and running wasn't possible, nor was speeding up the clock. I was killed of course.

So in both cases I have to ask: what am I doing wrong? The controls don't seem very intuitive for a flight sim and there is no mouse flight toggle option.

Hi

You most likely ran out of hydrogen. The hyperdrive uses that. The map tells you on the righ side, how much you need to reach the selected target. You can buy it on stations, or scoop a gas giant if you have fuel scoop.

Your fuel (propellant) for insys travel is used up because the the autopilot accelerates for about 1/3th of the fuel, or halfway, whichever comes first, then coasts, then turns over to decelerate. (Brachistochrone transfer).

Combat is a bit hard right now, I agree with you. You can target the ship by clicking on it (can be done while paused, an you can use the external view too), that will give you a lead indicator, which shows where to shoot. If you buy a radar maper, you will get some data on it too, like health.

You won't find traditional main speed control like in most games, you can use set speed mode (F5 Return increases, Right shift decreases speed) or manual, then you just use your thrusters, which fire with their full power (holding left shift limits thruster power. Strafe-ing will help a lot usually.

You can practice if you summon up an oponent (ctrl+F12, it will be the same ship the police uses, it's small, so hard to hit)

Movement in open space isn't readily visible, there's no visual aid around. You can turn on speed lines in the settings, that will give you some indication of speed and direction (akin to space dust, or I-war 2).

Hope this helps a bit. 🙂

Yeah this helps a lot, thank you 🙂 . I guess the game has a ways to go and I have a little to learn. So far it seems like a great setup though, I love that you can hire crew and take on jobs right out of an easy-to-use list. Hopefully at some point they'll include the option to get out of ship or walk around inside the bigger ones.
