To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Sounds of Pioneer

Hi all,

Most of you probably don't know, but I have made the sound effects for Pioneer.

In the last months (year) I worked a lot and had no time to improve anything, but now I am here and willing to help.

I will revisit the current sounds and improve the quality where I can.

Since I am not a programmer, it would be great if someone from the project grab my hand and guide me with a list of sounds needed.

(I also had a design/concept on how the universe should sound in Pioneer, I am still open to share the idea with someone willing to program it)

I am really happy to see how amazing this game became, great job everyone involved!

Welcome back 🙂

I'd like to have some sounds like a series of air/wind noises, starting at the gentle scale and going right on upto the kind of hypersonic thundering roar during re-entry.

Something to really let you know that you've come in a bit hot and the wings might come off 😉 It'd make fuel scooping a lot more interesting too!

Hi,

so its not natural wind, its airflow around the ship you need, right?

OK, will do it. I assume 4-5 sounds should be enough if you are capable of mixing them gradually depending on the speed.

Yes! That's what I would request also. The way it's done in Orbiter sounds right to me. I've also read a couple of comments saying the weapons sounds could use some improvement. What you've done thus far has been excellent, and yes, welcome back!

The OrbiterSound package looks interesting.

Yes it is. It's also a space simulator with sounds for re-entry noise and a lot of others which means that they've already solved a lot of the problems and makes it worth looking at what they've done because:

A: there's no point re-re-re-inventing the wheel,

B: it might highlight some of the problems we might encounter and help us avoid them.

@Tourist...

Yes.

I'm confused, what is the point you're trying to make?

I'm saying that we can learn something by looking at how they use their sounds, it doesn't mean we should use their sounds, only that looking at what they do might be helpful to us.

Well, I cannot help you from programming point of view and I am trying to avoid the usage of someone else's sound samples.

Usually either I record them or coming from a free source. Own recordings are always unique for some reason. 🙂

I am working on the re-entry sounds now, but feel free to bomb me with requests.

Ok. finished the airflow sounds.

Link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/92tjc2l0tr7fguh/N7Xnoyb1lq

You can find it under the ship section named airflow01, 02, 03, 04.

at slow speeds use 01 than as speed increases, slowly mix 02 on top of ... and so on and so on, at full speed all 4 should be on.

Replaced the nerve wrecking warning sound too...

Hi,

I'm doing the same but with "music", but I can not share because I do not have copyright. (only with friends or a playlist I can share).

I use the tutorial for creating "mod" by fluffyfreak aka Andy (here) . and is quite simple to do this kind of "mod".

you probably already know, but this might help others.

inside the folder "data", we have.

-Music

     -core

         -docked

         -near-planet

         -near-spacestation

         -player-destroyed

         -ship-destroyed

         -ship-firing

         -ship-nearby

         -space

         -undocked

I wonder if it is possible to have these "core songs" for example,

the Sol system, you hear these songs, and System Tau-Ceti hear a different "Core music" from another Folder!?.

sorry i use google translator, and i have more questions about another folder called "Sounds" and files like  "M_Flare_Star.ogg", and "Planet_medium_civilisation.ogg", can i ask the questions here!?

anyway, good work, i like it, thank you.

I have nothing to do with music, hopefully someone will explain that section to you.

On your other question, go ahead and feel free to ask!

Hi.

Well, I had a dream, and those files are the rotten memento of it. 🙂

I still has that dream, but I am not a programmer, so I cannot realise it.

In nutshell: I wanted Pioneer to be realistic in terms of sounds, so no sound outside the atmosphere, but electromagnetic waves.

If you are inside the ship, you can hear your engines weapons, etc, but cannot hear the normal sound of other's engines and weapons.

Due to this, I though to give situational awareness, a ship should use an electromagnetic wave reciever, and I planned to create an EM version of those sounds.

Also wanted to create an ever changing sound of the universe, so every planet emits EM signals, and depending on the size and distance (similar to gravity), you can hear the sound of the planets.

For this, to be realised, I would need a help of a programmer, first to understand the current planet/sun/moon types, since they are different than frontier, and next to program the concept.

But on the other hand, maybe its not a good idea... I think I will put together a demo clip, to sell the idea. 🙂

This is what the real thing 'sounds' like.

Just to be clear, its not an original idea, its an existing thing.

NASA is converting radiowaves of planets to audible sound since the beginning.

See this video:

The real recordings are quite raw and spooky, I decided to make softer and less raw sounds.

Uranus sounds...  😆

Ehm... Apart from my foolishness ... I think it's a great idea! Perhaps, softening the sounds a little bit, as Staniol said  😉

You can check my soft sounds in the pioneer/data/sounds/space, already done some work.

And I thought we'd finally finished laughing at Uranus a couple of years ago. 😉

I'm sure that's why there are no spaceports there.

Here they are, indeed. But I don't seem to have ever heard them when playing... Are they disabled, or at very low volume?

What would they say?

"Look! We have just colonized Uranus!" Ewww...  😆

Yeah, and when they ask you at the space bar where you come from there will be a fight every time. 😉

I made the sounds into a mod and got a red screen of death.

"Error: Vorbis file sounds/Cockpit/Ship_ambient.ogg is not 44100Hz or 22050Hz Bad!"
