To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

You've played Pioneer for days, weeks, months, even years, explored the galaxy, slingshotted around the brightest stars and crashed in our famous spiky asteroids. It has all been fun and nice, but now you find it a bit boring. Furthermore, you want to give back to the community for having made this whole game possible. But how ? The devs don't hang out much on SSC, the only time you asked how you could help on IRC you were either (depending on the time of day) ignored or flooded by generalities or very specific requests about stuff you didn't know about, and, well, Github is just a big mess. And BTW, git, what's that?

If you could relate to at least some of the above, you should be interested by the following offer.

I hereby pledge to mentor anyone willing to tackle the issue #3287 ( https://github.com/pioneerspacesim/pioneer/issues/3287 ) from setting up your environment (although if you don't use Linux it might be a bit difficult for me, but at least I can guide you towards someone who can :-), using Git to fetch the sources, understanding the issue, solving it, to eventually getting the code merged and shipped. The only bits you won't get to do are merging the changes and updating the Changelog and AUTHORS files, since those are traditionally reserved for our long-time contributors.

The task itself isn't terribly difficult. You'd have to edit the Ship equipment code to make a small change, and write up a new piece of equipment from scratch in a separate module. As the author of the equipment code, I'm confident I can guide you through it :-).

So, interested ?

To contact me, it's probably easiest to use IRC. If you are not familiar with it, write me an email at chopin DOT simon AT gmail DOT com, and I'll help you set it up : it is where a lot of the action takes place!

I'm still pretty new with lua. I'm currently dabbling with mission scripts to get more familiar with the game internals and the language. Maybe in a little bit?

queue me in for some time after clausimu.
really keen on the pioneer space sim project, and love this idea and approach, but i'm just so-o-o-o not ready to take on a mission like this yet.

would love to some day.

i'll keep watching for more such missions as i progress n learn, and maybe someday when i'm a little more skilled i'll see a mission like this which i'd feel worthy of taking on. 🙂 for now, i wouldnt want to waste anyone's time though ~ er, this post's on the line for wasting your time now isnt it... oops.

If you have a chance, have a look at the issues labeled Bite-sized in the tracker. They're (supposedly) a nice entry point to the codebase. And don't hesitate to come by IRC to ask if anyone would be willing to mentor you in writing a fix for those.

I'll try to think of other tasks similar to this one for you guys to do 🙂

Laarmen, I will give your thread a bump concerning the Planet Scanner equipment in this months Mod DB update. Hope it helps! It's always nice to see new folks joining the project. :girlcrazy:

Speaking of the scanner, Walterar has something a bit like this in Scout Plus but without the progress bar ect as you will know. Just for fun I added this track to Scout when its scanner is in operation. Gives that sort of radar pinging, discovering things kind of feel.
