To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

The Game

  • Beyond Black Space is a real time space strategy game focused on the ability to control the entire inner workings of your ship and crew. You are the captain of the last surviving ship from earth.
  • You decide on how to advance the ship, how to equip it, appoint officers to each role and assign crew members to repair specific systems.
  •  Your officers will be unique and irreplaceable should they die. They will learn and advance in their job role as time goes on becoming more efficient at what they do giving the ship stronger abilities.
  •  For repairs you will have a resource system used to assign crew members to specific repairs. Your general crew also advances in repairs as time goes on should they survive.
  •  Escape an unknown force seeking to destroy you while exploring the galaxy, meeting new races and discovering alien technology to improve your own ship.

Features:

  • Amazing Story, in fact we are writing a book about it!
  • Randomly Generated Galaxy for a different adventure every time!
  • Over 1000+ Random Story Scenarios/Missions with random choices and random outcomes giving every player a unique experience every single time.
  • Multiple methods to advance/upgrade your character/ship based on your play style. Engage massive fleets and be rewarded, find advanced vessels, destroy and extract parts from them or find and mine asteroid belts to craft your own upgrades.
  • Officers who improve their selected job roles but be careful for death is permanent here.
  • Engineering - Assign specific repair orders, choose priority of what needs to be repaired but be warned, if shields are down and that section gets hit again, your team will be space dust.
  • Interactive battle choices, decide on your style by becoming a war ship equipped with the latest and greatest weapons, becomes the fastest and hardest ship to hit, a carrier with thousands of fighters to deploy or something completely different. The choice is yours!
  • Advanced Character Improvements, as you progress and complete events you will gain experience tokens that you can use to improve your leadership skills by unlocking new abilities, buffs and more.
  • It's just you out here, you are alone in space with no place to repair. You must manage repair on specific systems and your overall health/hull. If your hull collapses its game over, no check points here. Repairs have to be done in real time whenever you get a chance.
  • Meet new and unique races throughout the galaxy. Become allies and gain great benefits or declare war on them. Every choice you make will have ripple effects throughout the galaxy. Becoming allies with one race may automatically make you an enemy with others so choose carefully.
  • Customize and choose a captain portrait and then choose and assign officer portraits! (Choose yourself if you contributed a certain level!)
  • Map Timers, every section you travel to will give you a limited amount of time to conduct repair before having to move on

Combat

  • Combat will be real time strategic action. You will have to target enemy systems to try and disable or destroy them before they do so to you.
  • But that isn't all, as your ship takes damage you will have to send repair teams  to get damaged systems back up and running.
  • The game will feature many different types of weapons, shields and advanced technologies. Will you go with one type or mix and match different technology to be prepared for anything space has to throw at you?
  • In combat 3 choices will play a major role. First you need to choose your style, weapons r'us, fleet carrier, big shield modules and hull upgrades or become a ship so fast that no one will see you coming. Maybe a balance between all of the above? It all depends on your choices and how you wish to play. The ship awaits your equipment and upgrade choices.
  • Second, you will have to choose how you will attack, this can greatly depend on how you fit your ship. You can disable weapons and leave the enemy sitting ducks as you slowly chew away their hull. Maybe disable their super fast regenerating shields first? What you target is up to you.
  • And finally, you must simultaneously manage your ship repairs. Lets say your Engines, Shields and Hull all take damage, what do you repair first? Shields to prevent any further damage? Engines so you can make a quick escape? Or your hull so you don't blow up? You have many more systems to repair on your ship and a resource system to assign repairs throughout your ship. The repairs portion of Beyond Black Space plays a huge role on your overall success and provides a very unique experience that is both fun and gives a sense of total control.

Harvesting

  • Asteroid Mining is the name of the game here. But in Beyond Black Space you wont fly into an asteroid belt, be greeted by some cheesy text and have resources appear in your inventory. Oh no...
  • Here you will have to work for your catch starting with finding an unoccupied asteroid belt(unless you want to conquer one).
  • Harvesting will be done by first scanning the asteroid belt to see which resources it contains, how rich they are and how stable the asteroids is. Keep in mind that the accuracy of this scan depends on your scanning ability and equipment.
  • Once done you will choose the richest and most stable asteroid to mine. But do not get too greedy as over mining it will cause it to collapse and destroy everything you cut out.
  • Finally you will send out a recovery shuttle to collect the resources.
  • There will be many different asteroid belt types each containing its own unique resources with different properties.
  • Keep in mind for those who do not enjoy this type of game play other methods of collecting upgrades has been establishes such as war zones, missions and strip mining enemy vessels.

Crafting

  • Crafting will be completed with resources gathered from the asteroid belts. Basic ship equipment upgrades can always be worked on and rare schematics can be found throughout the galaxy allowing very powerful ship equipment, weapons and other upgrades to be researched.
  • This will also be a very involved process but yield great rewards for those who enjoy this game style. There is a fine balance to keep crafting fun without being too simple. And as with mining this will be an optional path to follow for those who enjoy it.

Factions System

  • The game will have a very basic faction system that keeps track of all interactions with alien species you may encounter.
  • Since every play-through is randomly generated, you may not always encounter specific races.
  • The game will randomly pick from the list of aliens and spawn them into your game, randomly generating alliances and wars between them. So you will never know in games which alliance may upset other races.
  • Forming alliances has several benefits in the game. You will be able to access restricted asteroid belts, receive backup and pass blockades that allies have setup. While in ally space you will also have a longer timer per map.

Not doing too well, they still have 17 days left but only have 1300 dollars.

Looks like the curse of the updates has struck again as they have only done three since starting the Kickstart.

That's the end of this Kickstarter only 36 hours left but they only manged to get $1500 of the 56k they were after, not doing enough updates methinks.

That would be my guess as well Pinback, they started it on the 8/2 and the bulk of there posts (3) can within days of start and then they went silent and only other update was posting concept art. I think people want to see gameplay and actual screenshots for a game that needs $50+k

Seems to be a general problem with indie developers on Kickstart that a lot of them fail to engage with their backers through the updates. It takes a lot of work to get a successful Kickstart and unless they are prepared to put themselves out there they will never get anywhere near the funding goal.

Of course their are lot of other factor involved but I can't help but think not doing update is one of the bigger ones.
