To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

The developer behind the Flatspace series, Mark Sheeky, has announced on his website that he is working on a special edition Flatspace game, Flatspace IIk. It is not a remake, rather a large update of Flatspace II, featuring new features and the ability to create "plug-ins" for the game. This translates into mods, unfortunately, apparently everything EXCEPT the ships will be moddable due to the custom model format.
Here's the post from the website:
Other than that, there's not that much more information. Here's some images from the Face book page, but they are early and look very much like the original...
I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out!
Would be interested in knowing what is included in the 'general program update'? Because this could really be a DLC addon for existing owners of Flatspace II and a new game for those that don't. But this is good news overall because I like hearing this and adding modding ability always extends playability and lifespan.
Moving this to the commercial area since this will be sold.
Oops, my bad. Of course it's going to cost money...
*slaps forehead*
No more posting after midnight. π
Sheeky hadn't released any solid information about the features and content yet, except for the experimental plug in system. I do know that it is a large update to the original Flatspace II and a whole new game, but I wouldn't hold your breath, by the sound of it it's just a few extra bits and pieces and a much upgraded soundtrack. Still, personally I'm excited because I'm a bit of a Flatspace fan... π
If you were never an owner of Flatspace II this is prime opportunity to do so when it is complete. I know you mentioned that the only thing we wouldn't be able to mod is the ship models. I know it was mentioned that they use custom graphics, i'm sure some sort of plugin/converter could be made to add these to the game as well. Why not go all the way.
Indeed, you would think that there would be some sort of converter. And seeing as I know the idea of ship modding is popular, I'm sure Sheeky will work out something. π
To be honest, the only Flatspace game I've owned is the iOS version. I've played that countless times, and I still think it's the most repayable, free-form based mobile game on the App Store. It strikes the right chord in me- I just love the feeling of after days of hard work trading/bounty hunting, you finally get to have a new shiny ship with even more weapons. I remember buying my first destroyer... good times... π I've played the Flatspace II demo, but that's about it.
Why is it that no other commercial space sim free-form title never completely gets it right? I've played a hell of a lot of them, and they all excel in some areas and fail in others. For example, the X series, I love how the graphics are well done, and there is plenty of options to play with. But it's way to complex, and the world just isn't immerse, the ships on the radar are just another listing... there's gotta be a perfect game out there somewhere... π
Oops, went off on my mindless rant again. π
Will get that perfect game someday.... I do hope that Sheeky will try to create something that will allow players to create there own ships. Any word since you play the iOS version if this special edition will be ported to that as well?
On a side note some games like Flatspace are Transcendence and Naev so you might want to check those out and they are free.
Hey, that was quick- Mark's posted on his website that he's released the "Technical Pack" for Flatspace IIk. It looks more like a demonstration though, currently it has no use.
Well, Sheeky didn't do the iOS port for the first game. I think Wisp Games did that, except they seem to be disbanded, as I can't contact them. So unless another group or somebody with experience with this sought of thing wants to port it, it won't happen. Which is sad, I'd love to play FSIIk on my iPod. π
I've played Transcendence before, which I believe is one of the best freeware space games out there. I combined it with mods to create a more open game though, I never really liked the structured "level one, level two, level three etc" style approach. Haven't tried Naev yet, I held off due to the download size. How does it compare to Transcendence?
