To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

On the back of reading the epic thread about why space sims are unpopular, I thought I'd make a thread just for fun about some ideas I had for space sims that aren't the usual trade/explore/shoot pirates/aliens. If this is the wrong forum section, please can a mod move it. Otherwise feel free to comment or add your own ideas
Premise:
- Hidden in a nebula, a series of mysterious, long abandoned megastructures are discovered
- The mega-structures act like reefs, supporting a host of exotic creatures that live on or swim around the mega-structures
Features
- No black space! Everything is well lit with bright, vivid colours of the swirling gas clouds
- No stations. Motherships and carriers are sent in as mobile bases that act as a player's mobile home as they move through the storyline. Players take small craft on missions or to explore the areas around them
- Native life interacts with the player. Repeated player hostility will cause the whole ecosystem to react against you. Treat them with respect and they will leave you alone and maybe even reveal some of their secrets to you
Or for another idea:
Premise:
- Spaceship racing sim. Players have a season of races where they compete to win the overall championship (think F1 but in space)
- Storyline mode where players have various adventures between races
Features:
- Fully customisable racing ship with all the tuning and bling of a typical racing game
- Fast paced, action packed excitement, weaving round asteroids, past clusters of micro-black holes or between pockets of dangerous gases
- Each race / solar system has unique environmental and man-made challenges players must overcome
I have always liked discovering things in space, especially in large games where you might be the only person to have found this site. EVE has done a good job on there game and there is no 'black space' personally I don't look at this as a requirement as long as it serves a purpose and just not a useless backdrop. If I see a colorful nebula or storm I should be able to fly to it and enter it.
I like this concept a lot, especially if it might be something that isn't too visual like a bacteria that you sturred up with landing or thrusters and it starts to eat away at your hull or gets inside the ship and starts to work on the crew or electronics 🙂
It would also be nice to actually have a crafting/fabrication in a game where you do come across some derelict ship and its just junk but maybe you can refine the metal/ore to add a new coating to your hull plating... stuff like that where nothing goes to waste. Or you can melt it down and sell bricks to stations/vendors for goods to get by. Being a actual scavenger in a game sounds fun especially if you can work your way into something elite later with hard work of course.

Think this may have been done, then again maybe Iam just thinking about Wipeout or one of the StarWars games.
Tomorrow War has a race level in it and IIRC a couple of other games have race levels.
Yeah but those aren't done in space. But Wipeout and Pod Racer are pretty fun.
