To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Your favorite NEW space 4x game?

Hello! I've been looking at getting a new 4x space game. As I look around I have found Armada/2526, Distant Worlds, Sword of the Stars, Sins of a Solar Empire and Galactic Civilizations 2.

These seem to be the newest in the 4x genre, and I'm a little curious as to what are your favorite titles? I got SotS complete edition for 5 dollars off of gamersgate a week ago, and am working my way through that title's learning curve.

Any you feel I missed? (NEW! Not Moo2! I know.. I know. But we play it all the time! No need to discuss that one. :P) Any personal recomendations?

I picked up SotS for $5 as well a few months ago and have yet to play it, hope too some day 🙂

Yeah Star Ruler is a good choice, but any others are still a work in progress.

I quite enjoyed Space Empires 4 & 5, but to be honest the Gal Civ, SotS and Sins games took up most of my time. Others to consider could be Light Of Altair and the new Sins based Rebellion, presently in Beta 2 development. I am a bit unsure if this is an add-on or stand alone game, possibly a bit of both? Also (just to be different) you might give Haegemonia some consideration. Yes its mission and ship to ship combat based, but it does have a certain whiff of "4Xness" about it, plus its one of the most beautiful games I have ever laid eyes on. Gold Edition available on GOG.

Finally you should always keep an eye on Far Colony here at the SSC. I love the amount of detail that is going into that game 😎

Some of my favorite games:

Distant worlds: Great gameplay coupled with epic scale epicness. I would surely pick it up! And I have, and it is quite enjoyable.

As mentioned earlier, Haegemonia is a fine candidate. You might want to add some extra flavours to it, like star wars-ness through vector prime and more epic maps and mechanics through prophecy.

If you want to go back to the 90's, a great 4X game (and one of the first RT4X games, if not the first), is the imperium galactica series. Especially Imperium Galactica 2: Alliances is very good! With some patching, it'll work fine even on newer computers. Think of MOO in realtime 😎

Also, light of altair is a fine 4X game if you like some more basic games (but not less challenging!).

lemme browse further through my installed games list.

Ah yes, I run here into homeworld 2. Add the complex mod to that, and you'll have an outstanding game! Video:

And we delve deeper into my games list, and we hit some more games...

I would recommend watching Sword of the Stars II. If it gets some more bugfixes, it would make one of the most epic 4X games ever made 🙂 I own it currently, so can keep an eye on it for you.

If you want an MMO feel, try beyond protocol / after protocol. Also a very outstanding game!

Galciv II is a nice game 🙂 I did like the concept of Star Ruler (I beta tested it), but as said earlier, it should still be considered a work in progress. Some mods fix the most annoying parts of the game though.

Soase Rebellion, hmmm, what to say about that. It's a fine game, adds quite some stuff. But for me it kinda feels like an expansion pack in its current state (yep, I play the beta of it). If it would drop in price a few bucks, I would recommend buying it though.

So that quite sums it up 🙂 Enjoy many, many hours of gaming.

Oh before I forget... I found another ancient game in my games list... It's Far Gate! The game is hardly known about, but it's a very well-made game, and one of the first successful indie games. You'll be able to find it on the interwebs. If not, I might be able to give you heads up where you can get it.
