To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

i'm downloading the trial right now to give it a go? how is the community in this game? i see it's only $10 a month which isn't too bad. at least it's not F2P.
does this game have a steep learning curve like EVE? if so, does anyone have any pointers or tips for me?
Granted I played VO a few years ago and they have had a lot of patches since then. back when I played I didn't particularly like the UI so I didn't dive in and play the game. I know they have been talking about an overhaul of the game when 2.0 is released but that has been coming for years now, they are slowly making their way towards it.
well i got the demo and made an account on their website but when i tried to login in the game, it wouldn't let me. idk. so i uninstalled and renewed my Eve sub. 😛
What platform are you on?
Vendetta rocks the socks off of Eve.

i use win 7 64 bit but yea. i couldn't even log in to the game for some reason. i made an account on their site and the game just wouldn't let me log in to play. so i uninstalled it.

Strange. That's the first I've heard of an issue like that. You should definitely open a support ticket; there's a link on the main site. The devs are pretty quick about getting back to people on any support issues.
I think this game should go to free to play model if they want more people to get inside game.
F2P model is proven to be the best if you don't have a lot of money for adverts or you are not big production company.
In this genre Eve online is well known and successful like a WOW.
Any other "smaller" project need F2P model or is doomed 😉
Now there is another question and that is can they have more than 2-3k players on their server?
If the answer is yes they need F2P immediately, we say it in Serbia: they need it yesterday 😀

i don't think this is true. i personally stay away from F2P cause those cash shops do nothing but nickel and dime you. whoever spends the most money has the best of everything. that's not my idea of fun. i'd much rather pay 10 or 15 a month and know that nobody can get anything better than me by just throwing cash around. this is the reason i stopped playing Black Prophecy, a game that i loved the second i started playing it.
I agree. F2P can work when it's designed into the game from the outset, but I think it really hurts the integrity of the game when developers make the switch. I've played almost every subscription MMOG there is, and stopped when it's gone F2P. The only exception has been D&DO, which perhaps should have started as F2P as it suits the modular nature of how scenarios are played.
I've not played VO for a few years but I did download the Android version to my tablet. It's kinda cool playing a full-on 3D MMOG on the device, but it's no substitute for a keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Well maybe you two don't like it but F2P is future of MMO gaming.
I understand it is not easy to switch for developers but hey its "do or die" 😀
There are a lot of successful F2P MMOs out there like WOT or in genre STO where developers did not hesitate to switch to F2P and result is - game is live again.
About VO, they just need to implement right way F2P so that game is not "buy-from-store-to-play".
Let say you have skills up to lvl 20 and it is easy to get skill to max. Some ships/equipment/whatever you put/ are dependent on skill lvl to be able to use them. Skills are like eve - not too important. But when you don't have them you can't use the best ships ships/equipment/whatever you put/.
Than when you die you loose almost everything from ship to cargo and equipment to your skills you had.
Let say 70% skills you loose. That is if you are F2P player.
And if you are premium (monthly paying for game) you loose only 30% or less.
So it is not game-braking and it is not "buy-from-store-to-play".
Nothing wrong with this system.
And still players have motive to pay for game but if not they need a little more time to use the best ships/equipment/whatever you put/.
That is a little idea how they or other developers can solve F2P balance for space MMO games.
Than you put a lot of not important stuffs like in Eve or STO so your online store will be busy.
p.s.
Tell me what is difference between Eve PLEX system where you can buy ISK regularly and other F2P systems?
For me it is the same.
Well, there has been a lot of discussion on the topic:

However, I think the consensus is VO's payment model has worked well so far. Personally, I'm glad it has avoided going the route of f2p for a variety of reasons, most of all that the current model brings a level playing field to the game. To use the plex analogy, one could simply buy a 10 USD subscription for a friend if one were so inclined. The only difference is that you cannot presently earn items having real world currency value in game (this is a large positive from my perspective). Also, I believe you get a free 2 week pass to give away to a friend after being subscribed for so many months.
I understand it is not easy to switch for developers but hey its "do or die" 😀
Saying it's the future is suggesting it's inevitable - the only way. That's like saying Kickstarter is the future of game funding. No, it's just what is going on right now. In actual fact there's a case for saying in a world full of F2P games, the P2P game stands out. EVE is ample evidence of this. Increasingly, so is WOW.
WOT was built as a F2P game from the outset, so it's not a good example. STO was bought up by a F2P publisher, so the switch was inevitable. More people are undoubtedly playing it and I'm sure it's very profitable, but the point is I have no intention to invest any money in it.
Absoluetly. If they can make money from it, attact new players and not piss off the playerbase, sure, it can work. I might not play it, but I'm just one guy 🙂
For me it is the same.
Fundamentally it's a form of sanctioned RMT rather than a F2P system, although of course you can bring in enough ISK to pay for your subscription. The main difference, I think, is that the market acts as a buffer between real money and what the ISK is used for. That buffer also works as a comfort blanket for subscriber die-hards like me. 😀

you make a good point, and i'm not disagreeing with you. F2P is good in some ways, even to me. i do like that i can try a game without paying anything at all. and yes the whole plex thing basically the same thing. it is cool that you can actually pay for you sub. with it though by buying it with isk.
i don't think anyone is right or wrong when it comes the the F2P or monthly subscription debate. i just prefer not to use free 2 play.
WOT was built as a F2P game from the outset, so it's not a good example
Actually it is good example of good and successful F2P game from the beginning and STO is good example of switching from P2P to F2P but it was one big sentence and i knew somebody will misunderstand 😀
Sorry English is not my native language 😉
Anyway i really think Eve has P2P and "buy-from-store-to-play" (buy PLEX) system.
(i know that because i was black market dealer and i met some people who gave me 200e in a matter of couple of seconds just to get enough isk to play the game. And they couldn't get enough isk what they needed not from me but from numerous black market dealers)
The system is good for them (CCP) and for some people who don't want to pay for play. Instead they buy in-game PLEX.
But for all of you people saying "i don't like F2P system because somebody can buy all the best equipment with real money",
i say it is the same with eve online.
