To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

It's funny, I played the first two games some years ago, and there's much to admire in them, but something kept putting me off. Then I was reading this thread, and going through all those amazing recent screenshots that Diablo posted thinking, "wow, this will be epic, how can I not have been looking forward to it!" And then I saw it: the "dancing for profit" screenshot 🙁 And everything came flooding back to me.

The reason I could never take the X games seriously is because I couldn't shake the feeling that they don't take themselves seriously.

Cahoonaburgers? Bliss Places? It was the little things like that that just threw me back out into the real world and made me think: that's silly. Killed the immersion. I'll still buy and try Rebirth when it comes out because I want to support the genre, but I fear it will be just the same as the others, only with better graphics.

Rant over! 🙂

My problem with all X-games so far is that space doesn't really feel like space in them. The sectors are small arenas full of space stations (but not much else) connected together through jump points and all the other space objects are in the 2D backround. You don't interact with them and that makes you feel disconnected. Travelling through these sectors, even with SETA on, is slow and boring. Especially after playing something like Independence War 2 where you can jump to light speed at any moment.

I was playing X3:AP the other day, and I arrived in one Terran sector that had a huge space station in the middle of it. I was still on the edge of that sector, yet the space station was so big it looked like I was just there. Getting to it, however, took ages and later I realized, it didn't matter in which part of that sector I was, that space station was always the only thing to look at. When I arrived next to it, I realized just how enormous and detailed it was - flying close to its surface and through the holes, openings in it was fun, but ultimately, flying anywhere else in that sector was boring, much like in most others.

Travelling / exploring in X-games simply lacks speed, scale and space objects like planets, nebulas, stars, etc. that aren't just in the backround. Luckily, X-Rebirth  seems to be a big improvment in these areas. We'll see.

Agreed DiabloTigerSix, the stations were enormous in X3TC but were insanely detailed and usually it felt alive near them. But there was no real sense of exploration and having to use that time compression to travel seemed funning when you can see that big ole station but took you a minute or so to get too it 🙂

My only worry is that X: Rebirth will require some specs that will force my upgrade of hardware to play it in all its glory.

I have TRIED to play all the X games so far, but I just can't. They're so boring that it drives me insane. Still, this opinion is based on only the first mission in each of the games because I always make an impression based on the first mission so if that sucks, I assume the game overall sucks. But I can't argue that their graphics are eons ahead of mine so I gotta give them credit for that.

IIRC that screen shot was just an April fools joke from last year.

Never took to the X series just found them to be too generic but like Solcommand I give them points for the ship designs and graphics.
