To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

70$ to play this. Not even a demo.

My roommate bought the original DW a long time ago and it was plagued with bugs and bad UI design. I tried it, it was entertaining at first, and the worlds were epic but the gameplay got boring very quickly and the UI was so bad it was just a chore to play it. Supposedly this was all made better in the first expansion, but at the time the package cost over 60$. Yeah right? Big budget games cost less than that and the "first impression" wasn't very good already. By the 2nd expansion the game started to look very interesting but it cost 80$ then. What, still no price drop on anything?

Okay, they finally dropped the price on the bundle but call me crazy for not wanting to slap down a 70$ investment when StarDrive just came out. It's basically Distant Worlds on crack (presentation-wise) and with seemingly more interactive gameplay across the board for less than 1/3rd of the price. Before, DW could at least say that they were "the only game like it" as justification for their ridiculous pricing. Not now. Now it just looks like a dated game with a rip-off pricetag.

tl;dr: Get real, Matrix.

Original Distant Worlds can be considered an Alpha. Shakturi a beta. Legends made the game take off. And Shadows (having played both playstyles extensively) enriches the game in many ways. All the gameplay elements get enhanced a LOT by the changes. Stardrive is by itself a nice game. But compared with Distant Worlds Shadows, I'd definately go for DW Shadows, even though the pricetag is far higher. And the next expansion will be going to make Distant Worlds last for decades. It will be seen then as the new standard (and is already seen so by many).

Your opinion is correct about original DW. And I agree with that.

I would simply warn you of the dangers of judging Distant Worlds just by the original game. It's the expansions (especially legends and shadows) which make this game shine brighter than any star out there.

I'm inclined to believe you but it is still far too much to pay for word-of-mouth. Though I have been keeping an eye on the series, and if I thought it was as bad as it was at release I wouldn't even care. But DW was boiling over with potential and it does seem like a game that's worth playing now, especially with the performance optimizations (and by the way I consider that kind of thing to be a "fix" not "expansion content", but anyway).

Maybe after a few weeks when there's some extensive LP coverage of the game, I might reconsider, but hopes and dreams just aren't worth the asking price at the time.

DW still has its weak spots. Im in the process of making a video of DW. Takes some time though. Not much time and energy when being ill. But I will do what I can do.

I would like to say that I do recommend you to wait till at least mid june. They are now fixing a lot of the small bugs which are there since the release of Shadows. Mainly small bugs like some weird UI stuff (wrong layouts, things not entirely visible due to more data being displayed now, the odd CTD here and there). Still me and a friend spent a whole week analyzing the gameplay of Shadows. We still do see some weaknesses, but there's alot improved by Shadows. But as you mentioned, the price tag is very high. I can understand that fully, especially because many people can't afford to buy an AAA-priced title every one or two months.

If you would make the jump, wait till at least 15 or 20th of june, since then most bugs are hammered out which are there. Bugs are not much surprising to mee seeing the huge complexity of the game now in terms of mechanics and code complexity (especially the latter). That doesn't make them okay. It just makes it understandable that they're there with the relatively small beta testing team they had. For these kinds of titles a company usually has 50 to 100 beta testers when a publisher like EA or Ubisoft makes that game. And even they screw up rather often (but that's due to other reasons).

Anyways, i think i should stop my rant here and hit the bed 🙂
