To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hello Everyone!

My name is Albert, and I would like you to meet Universe Edge. It is a single-player, spaceship-building, crew-management and space-exploration game.

The game is using the blocks/voxel mechanics for building the ship, but with a few more shapes variety. ( currently 6 shapes, I will be adding another 6 more shapes in the next batch ). You can set any colors of each's blocks face, set their textures ( solid and glass types ).

 

The crew-management is inspired from Gnomoria where you don't have a direct control over the crew, but you designate task that you want them to do. It also has a z-level viewing. The crew will do all task within the ship, they'll require foods, furnitures, and other needs.

 

For the space-exploration game, I will be using Eve Online mechanics, where you could travel from sector to sector ( with a use of a interface map, so it wont be seamless ) though travel within a sector is continuous.

 

As you can see, Universe Edge is just a combination of different mechanics from different games I have played in the past. I am having some trouble coming up with new ideas or some 'originality'. But I haven't seen anything like it yet, and I am hoping it to become fun!

I have estimated to reach an Alpha Release on Q2 2015 ( also a test release on late 2014 ), I haven't finalize all the ideas yet, so the game is pretty open-ended for new ideas and suggestions, also as someone who hasn't played a lot of space-games or watch/read sci-fi shows/books, I am going to need a lot of ideas as I am lacking the Sci-Fi knowledge! I don't even know why I started a space game in the first place! lol. But yeah... It is the only thing I have in my life right now, and I am putting all my heart in it. 8.gif

The idea of the game kinda started way back in 2011, but only 'really' started a few months ago when I had the opportunity to work on it full-time.

I will be releasing a 'Ship-Builder' version of the game on Saturday ( Feb 1 ) and anyone is welcome to try it out! all ships made will have a chance to be used in the Teaser Trailer ( with your permission, ofcourse ). I will be working on making the trailer next month.

I would love to feature a lot of ship, but my laptop may not handle it! so I will try.

 

The trailer will show Asteroid Mining, a Space Station, inner workings of a ship, and a build up of a Fleet clash.

Planned Features ( before Alpha Release )

 

- SpaceShips

Right now, according to my understanding of my own code, it should be able to handle a 499x499x499 meter size of spaceship ( with the help of your computer's power ). Also a ship this size will require a lot of thrust power and energy.

 

- Planets

There will be both persistent and procedurally-generated planets in the game.

Their size is not infinite, and landing on them will not be seamless ( there's a 'loading' transition )

You can dig down and gather resources. You can live there and go back anytime.

 

- Minerals

minerals that you can mine from asteroids or planets has different 'properties' , when you place a block in your ship you are required some amount of minerals as its building materials. that block will then have the mineral's properties that its made of.

For example, there are minerals that enhance block's HP, or have a chance to deflect lasers, or HP regeneration.

 

- Active AI

I want the game to have as much as life as possible, every faction / fleet / ship should have their own goals and activity, that will greatly affect the events in the universe. This part of the development is still far ahead though. So I still have a lot of time to think how I will pull this off. 😀

 

Other Features ( If requested before Beta Release )

-Dockable Ships

-Weapon Customizations

-Boarding / Crew Fight

 

As I have mentioned, I haven't finalized the idea yet. Right now I am just basing on "Spaceship-Building" , "Crew-Management" and "Space-exploration". I'd love to focus more on Crew Management as it seems that it's what we're lacking on. So feel free to share your ideas! Thank you very much for reading!

Welcome to the forums Rebellion534.

 

Good list of feature and I would not too worried by not being a sci-fi fan, Crew management seem to the in thing at the moment as you say you don't have any direct control over the crew will they respond to any given situation like fixing damage to the ship or manning a gun turret when the ship is in combat or will the player have order them to do it.

Thank you! Players will need to select the specific equipment (gun turret ) physically or through an interface, and set a target.

If the gun turret has a specific crew assigned to it, and if available, then that crew will perform the task. else anyone who has permission to perform gun manning task will do the task.

Hi there Albert, I'm Nathan.

 

I noticed you're using Unity3D - I'm also using it. Isn't it such an amazing tool? Also, might I ask where you're from, I detect a familiar accent (a certain south east Asian country?) 🙂

 

Is this your first main development project or have you experience at making games? I've just released my first app on Google Play (kind of a very simple spaceship strategy - I've made my own post on it) after years of iterations of attempts at various games and game engines.

 

I have to say I do love your idea and wish you all the best of luck with it.

Hello Nathan! Yes, I've been using it for almost 4 years now, I love how you can make stuff fast and easy with it. I am originally from Philippines ( currently in CA ) was it hard to understand my accent? lol I'll probably add some subtitles in the next vid :laugh:

 

I did some small 2D games when I started out. But yes, this is my first big project, It was post-poned before, and I just recently continued it again.

 

Your game looks really great! I love the ships! I wish I have a good android phone right now :/

That is really cool! In the theme of Minecraft style building blocks your idea has huge potential.

I gave it a go for a while but unfortunately I have absolutely no creative skills. Further down the line I hope you're considering providing skeleton frameworks that players can use, rather than building from scratch.

That's actually a good idea! Thanks, we could let the player's derive from someone else ship. Then it wil have a title like "Derived from X Ship".

@PINBACK Yeah, I have been really lucky that a lot of people helped, even the current ship-builder is so tedious to use. Some of them even made several ships.

 

Anyway here it is, not much changes since the last youtube I posted.

 

Current next plan is a short pre-alpha demo alongside with a Kickstarter campaign on April. It's gonna be a really busy and intense month! 😕

UE is now 14 days away from the Pre alpha demo/KS. And I made some sort of 'Spaceship Guide' that will show you what stuffs will be in the demo. http://universe-edge.com/prealpha.html ( lots of pics and text! I will make a short video before the demo launch )

 

I have to tell you though that this is a really really short demo, maybe 5-10 minutes of gameplay.

This is primarily for the KS campaign to show more about the feel of the game and the future of its development.
