To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hey guys new here - Does anyone have any recommendations for a game similar to x3 where you can pilot / buy/upgrade/sell your ship
I really love the flying or sailing (either one) able to change up your ship in a sandbox environment where you can engage whoever you want.
Pirates of the Caribbean the 2003 (sea dogs 2) game was awesome you could choose when to broadside someone upgrade your ship and was pretty cool how it all worked.
X3 was def one of my favorite games - is there anything similar? The rebirth game was a huge disappointment if that says anything about what i'm looking for.
Kinetic void I tried and it was meh.. Felt very incomplete and missing alot of things.
Space engineers was awesome but again its more of a building game and not so much combat/trade/exploring
Please nothing linear - I hate linear games where you have to do a campaign. I just want something that will go on forever or a mod that will enable it if you have a linear game that can do said things.
Damage to certain systems/areas is always awesome too love that kinda stuff
Thanks!
Welcome to SSC, amigo - if you fancy something retro, see my sig.
Eve Online
Sid Meiers Pirates
Maybe: Starpoint Gemini 1/2
Later: Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous, Limit Theory, No Man's Sky
A very under-rated game is Evochron Mercenary (available on Steam), but its greatest features are the combat and flight model, the trading/outfitting is not very well done. It is open world however.
If you are willing to play something older I think Independence War 2 is one of the best games ever made. Probably has the best flight model in any game. The progression is somewhere between "linear" and "open world".
The only thing out there that is really an upgrade over X3 in the trading/building/outfitting areas is EVE. It really is an amazing accomplishment, and I think in some areas it will surpass Elite and Star Citizen for a long, long time to come, even assuming both those games are successful. It does have the disadvantage of being unforgivingly multi-player, so I have found it somewhat difficult to fit into my life time management wise, which is why I don't have an active account at the moment. If you are a big fan of X it is probably worth your while to spend some time looking at it.
I too was feeling extremely let down by X Rebirth, especially every time I think about X3.
Funny that I-War 2 also fits the bill very well that it's pretty much space pirate-themed at first.
Since no one mentioned any sailing games, I suggest East India Company.
Oh and the Guild II Renaissance. It is a bit buggy, but there is a community made patch available.
And while not being exactly the same, i'd say you will likely enjoy this game too.
Since you like "Sea Dogs", you might want to check the continuation of the franchise, "Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales", and "Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships". For X3, you can check " X3 - The Terran Conflict", "X3 - The Albion Prelude". You must definetely play "Freelancer", and the original "Wing Commander - Privateer".
Any space trading game made in the last thirty years will fit the bill.
Some of more modern example which can be found on Steam ect are Dangerous, Galaxy on fire 2, Darkstar 1, Starpoint gemini 1&2 and RingRunner amongst others.
