To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hi All,
Awesome to find a site dedicated to this little niche. Can anyone suggest a game where you can captain a ship or fleet that has enough depth to keep one interested and a learning curve that wont give one a heart attack while walking up the steep hill....
I have previously played X2 X3 and X3TC all of which I thoroughly enjoyed, one of my favorite games of this type though was star trek bridge commander, is there anything recentish that's similar to this?(Unfortunately I have a strong bias towards space games with good graphics)
Thanks All 🙂
The only one I can think of - off hand is Universal Combat.
It does have a learning curve, but it isn't that hard once you get used to the controls. However, you have to earn fleet status in the game, so you start as captian of one lone battlecrusier, then as you Rank, you move to fleet operations.
Besides, the game is free, without restictions. 😀
Welcome to SSC
It's not out yet but you might be interested in keeping an eye on Star Trek: Excalibur - http://www.stexcalibur.com/
Thanks for the replies guys.
@Darkone
Definitely interested in anything that improves on Star Trek BC.. that was by far one of my favorite games of all time. After the last Star Trek movie destroyed Star Trek lore and took away a lot what made Star Trek.. Star Trek(ie thought provoking, intellectual and frequent ethical dilemmas) I'm sold on anything that carries on the original Star Trek(STO etc). I'll definitely keep an eye on this.
I used to play Millenium back in the days and recently purchased Universal Combat but I'm not sold on it, it seems overkill and lacks depth in simple areas(AI Interaction, Subsystem Control, UI, etc) I'm just not totally sold on it(if I can be convinced to put the effort in so be it 🙂 )
X3 really did it for me for a while(fleets and capitol ships etc) but as I refused to use mods/cheats it just became an economical micromanagement game as this is what I lean towards given the option(it's less risky).
I've looked at evochron but that looks to be more of a fighter sim and I just can't find anything else, I'm definitely open to new suggestions though.
Off topic/rant...
But I must say this.... with a *sigh* why have games become so simple, and are the promising games so plagued with bugs etc.... Remember the days of Janes sims, Deus Ex and Homeworld...
There also Starshatter

and Darkspace
Not played them myself but I think you can command fleets in them.
