To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Found this game a few days ago and it looks pretty promising. Currently it is being developed for Xbox360 and PC. The game seems to be a mix of Wing Commander and Freespace in style. The game play from the videos looks smooth, not sure if the music in the video is covering up some of the voices or sound effects but it would be nice to hear some comm chatter (least my opinion).

The author looks to be a fan of WC and hopes he tries to capture some of its elements like the mission briefings, weapon loadouts and story building. Couldn't find much about the specifics of the game itself but the developer preview video covers a lot.

Don't forget to checkout the Eterium website: http://www.rogueearth.com/eterium/

The game looks great considering it's in early development stage but the graphics look a bit outdated ... although that might change till the final version of the game. Either way, I'm always glad to hear about new such games so I hope this one turns out ok. Good luck to the developer.

I think most of us that have grown up with the Atari2600 and Vic20's and such deserve to be graphics whores because we have earned the right 🙂 Kids growing up today don't even know what 8-bit graphics are and how much enjoyment we got out of playing pong and vector style graphic games 🙂

What I like most of Eterium is the smoothness of the flight engine or least it seems so in the video. The sound effects of the weapons could be improved upon but I am interested in all the other stuff you can do in the game besides the combat because usually space combat games have good space combat its the other things that make them good 😉

Yes it looks fine in my view, playability before graphics that's what I think. I also left a comment on you tube inviting the developer to drop by the SSC. Hope he does! 🙂

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the feedback. My primary focus lately has been the space combat. The game currently runs at a smooth 60 fps (videos are resampled to 30). I've spent a lot of time tweaking the space combat and auto-adjusting difficulty to provide a constant sense of danger without being frustrating (I'm not saying the game will be easy by any means).

I am actually not very happy with the preview video I posted, but I put a lot of work into editing it so I have not had the time to redo it. Shortly after releasing that video I redid the weapon system, greatly improving the look of the weapons, particularly the lasers. Check out http://www.youtube.com/rogueearth for more recent videos.

Lastly, as far as graphics are concerned, I am a bit of a graphics whore myself. My engine is certainly capable of better graphics, but I am art limited. Eterium is currently being produced by myself in my free time. I'm a great programmer but my art skills are a bit lacking.

Comments and suggest are always welcome. Since I work on this game in my free time after work, I cannot speak as to a release date at this time. A majority of the programming is done and what remains are graphics and mission construction.

Eterium has gone back into stealth mode for a while as we implement some of the many suggestions we have received from the original trailer and videos. I have had a professional artist join the team and he has been busy giving all the graphics an overhaul, I will have some of those new graphics to show shortly.

You can keep up with the latest at our development blog http://www.rogueearth.com . Don't fear, Eterium is not dead. I will be updated the official site and releasing a new trailer as soon as we have the new art up to spec. Until then, the blog is the best place to keep up with our progress.

Nice to hear the game still going Rogueearth look forward to seeing the new vid.

Interesting blog about using the procedural missions idea, nice start to the ship models as well although the Zhukov corvette looks like a fighter, or is it ment to be just a name and not a ref to the ship size.

I always really liked the Venture corvette from the original Wing Commander. That corvette did look like a fighter even though it was much bigger. The Zhukov corvette in Eterium has a crew of about 5 and is intended for long endurance missions. It is not a playable ship, at least not in this game :-). Think of the "cockpit" area as being a bridge with about 5 seats enclosed by glass. The ship is actually about 80 meters long compared to 32 meters for the Sagaris medium fighter, but that is nothing compared to 1200 meters for a carrier. I am quite happy with how the corvette looks. I should have some new ship pics to share soon.

Regarding the Procedural missions, I am quite pleased with how their development is progressing. I have written code and been testing both patrol missions and escort missions. They actually feel like missions that were scripted by a designer. Using these missions as filler will free me up to spend more time on the "exciting" missions which will be more than just traveling to Nav 1, Nav 2, etc.

It's ok being in stealth mode Rogueearth, because then you pop in and surprise us 🙂 The new ship models look great and procedural missions will be great asset and this will extend game play. Especially if you allow people to free roam and play campaign when they choose.
