To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

What are the differences between those two games?
I know FFE has better graphics (not that good but),newspapers, missions and a weaker AI.
Anyone else knows other differences?
I always thought the AI was better in FFE over FE2 😕
Anyways, major differences include, more ships in FFE, but the flight model I feel, is better in FE2. The ships just "feel" better to fly. FE2 is also bug free (mostly, the top turret on the Boa is useless, some versions had a bug you could exploit to raise the cargo capacity of your ship my clicking just below the jettison button and of course the famous wormhole bug that was present in the early versions of FE2) and I like the clean graphics in FE2 over the original FFE ones. The main problem FFE always had was that it was released in an unfinished state, hence the reason for the court case between David Braben and Gametek. Still much of that has been fixed now thanks to the efforts of the Elite Community! 🙂
After playing both recently, I have to agree with Geraldine. The missions and newspapers arn't all that great. FE2 has a MUCH better cockpit interface imho. I know they are pretty similar, but I jsut feel FE2's was much more polished and easy to use. I also agree with how the ships seem to .. 'feel' better. Its like the FFe ships are a bit more floaty. Hard to describe.
and the only FE2 remake is Pioneer right?
🙂
Hmm? If you mean a modern remake, then yes, Pioneer is the only one. Although I've never played it.
If you want to play FE2, go to FrontierAstro and you should be able to find the GLFE2 package. I was playing that for a little while.
I’ am the same Never like the look of FFE always preferred the flat shaded look of Frontier. and the Thargoid are back in FFE
Well, the Thargoids are kind of "there" in FE2. In some of the military bases you will see their ships landed on the surface, presumably they were being worked on by the military. Also in the Amiga version, there was a hack you could use which would unlock the Thargoid ship for use (or any other model in the game for that matter). Here is a link, but remember its only for use in disk based Amiga versions there are 2 versions of this trainer so I will post both http://aminet.net/package/game/patch/FrntTrn or http://aminet.net/package/game/patch/FrntTrn2
Perhaps David Braben did want to put them in the game as the Thargoid ship is in the code (along with a lot of other things which were not used), but he maybe ran out of time to properly integrate them into it? 🙂
You know I don't think I ever noticed that.
This came out in 93.
It kinda killed the space sim game industry since it set the standards very high.
Well there has been a lot games released since 93 just no games like Frontier/FFE in the commercial games industry and I tend to think the reason for this is this.
Planets =Content which=Time which=Money.
its seems far eaiser for a developer just to make an Elite clone then hype the graphics and couple of features so we end up with fairly generic games like the X series, Darkstar one, Spaceforce ect. There’s nothing wrong with any of the games its just that there all basically the same.
Pretty much agree with you there Pinback and cultist, when E4 finally breaks cover (keep the faith it will come 😉 ), the games industry will be very scared because it's my hope that game will raise the bar again and if other game firms want to jump on the band wagon, they are going to have to put alot more effort into it. Elite 4 has taken so long to appear for a very good reason (in my opinion), that reason being that it will have so much content, so much to actually do in the game, meaning for a relatively small development company like Frontier, the development time of the game will stretch out a bit. Mind you saying "stretching it out a bit" is an understatement in Elite 4's case 😳 I hope it arrives soon while I am still able to actually play it. 😕
Look out for pink octagons with two lines (engines, on the flat underside) the next time you are doing a photo or bombing mission. They are not at every secret base so you will have to keep at it. One will be the right way up and another beside it will be turned upside down. Will need to check this on the PC version, but they were certainly there in the Amiga version. 😉

Ah that probably reason I never noticed them as I was never too keen on doing those mission.
Oh dear 🙁
I just did an appraisal of my online gaming accounts, Steam is packed with stuff I picked in during their sales and never downloaded yet, as is GOG and Impulse and all that to add to the PILE of game discs and other open source stuff on my hard drive. And that's just the PC stuff! OMG 😯 How the heck am I ever going to play all this stuff! Right that's it, no more game purchases until Deus Ex 3 comes out!....................yea, as if 😆 😆 😆
I know what you mean. 😀
