To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Help: Looking for the perfect Space Exploration game.

Hi am a big fan of Space sims, and recently got back into playing Freelancer with Discovery Mod, but it doesn't quite reach that itch. I have looked into maybe playing ST:O but I have a feeling I will be disappointed in it at its current state.

I think what I am looking for is something like StarTrek Bridge Commander but with more emphesis on the individual roles of the player, so no one individual can do anything easily when in a large space cruiser (I don't think I am explaining this very well). If you don't understand what I mean please say so I will try to explain better.

I also want it to be multiplayer so I can get a group of friends together to run a single ship.

I am not interested in controlling the ship from the exterior I want to control the systems of the ship on a person by person basis (or player by player).

I would also like the ship to be explorable (preferrably 1st person but any standard game view is good for me).

Can anyone suggest anything that comes close to any of these?

Hello Dramacius

There is some sort of space sim in Second life which may have some of the features you are looking for.

I did see on a blog about a game which is run on about four computer, the idea being one guy plays the captain while the others control nav, weapons ect.But I can't find the blog I saw it on now.

I think I found the blog post your talking about...

This would be great as an MMO, its the way Star Trek Online should have been

This looks very interesting. But a bit too expensive with this outdated graphics. If they make it cheaper i would give it a try.

By the way, did Star Trek Bridgecommander have a multiplayer mode?

It did but it was against other players, not with them on your ship unfortunatly.

Also I could never get the voice command system to work

I agree and also wouldn't work very well as an internet game due to the nature of each machine only displaying part of the whole game. At least it should display the players specific console and the main viewer

edit

Just discovered that that Artimus game above has a free demo and the full game is now available for online play, still $40 is a bit steep but the graphics don't actually look that bad on the demo

take a look

(I feel like a bot) I appologise for appearing like I posted the opening post just to answer with this but its not the case, this was pure coincidence of research and wanting to share with the community here. There really arn't enough people into this style of game.

Not sure what the whole status of this project is but Bridge Commander II looks promising if the development continues, check out their media page:

Everything I have read so far regarding STBC2 says it has been closed,

That Artemis game was only launched publicly in October so that's probably why its not heavily published yet, I will make a post in his forum to direct him here to talk about it if people are interested.

I would like that game but with the ability to see the view screen all the time from any of the stations without the need of having a separate computer just for that. Saying that the game wasn't designed to run in that way.

It is possible to play it online in Bridge vs Bridge, I am going to look into finding a way to mod/port it to work as a fully online Ship Commander Sim

Right I am using my post as a rant post, hope people don't mind, I didn't want to open a new post for a rant (kinda related to my initial question).

StarTrek Online is a failure on the franchise in my opinion and again a failure as an MMORPG, let me explain.

First what is MMO - Well to start with MMO stands for "Massive Multiplayer (or Multiuser) Online - Simple enough

Secondly what is RPG - Now this is my interpretation so correct me if I am wrong - Role Playing Game (meaning you take on the role of an individual.

So an MMORPG would be a game where the player takes on the role of an individual in a Massive Multiplayer invironment so (and this is where I think ST:O is a failure as an MMO) why on earth (or in space) can a player control a whole ship such as a Galaxy or Sovereign Class (or even Defient) class ships single handedly with any real effect? Surely this is where the Multiplayer part of MMO should come into it getting players to work together in a common goal of controlling a ship, this would require a large number of players to be able to play at various times of the day, ie a guild of 400+ players will most likely only have approximatly 20 players online at one time (this should be enough to manage 1 ship with a few Bridge Crew, some Medical Crew if in a battle or something, and some Engineering crew to keep everything working.

Now here comes the Massive part of it you have lots of these "Guilds" or "Crews" in the same consistant world, it is space its not the hardest of environments to code non instanced (I can understand making planet landings and maybe each ship an Instance (but not in the term of only one group can enter it, more in terms of it requires loading into a safe(ish) area or by transporter loading the area before you arrive)).

In my opinion currently ST:O is a cross between StarTrek Academy (in the ship control system) and StarTrek Elite Forces(in the none ship control)

Now please someone correct me if I am wrong, I really wanted this game to be more but alas Cryptic have done a City of Heroes in Space where each zone is an instance and very little in the way of cross zone interaction works.

Thats a real shame. I wont play an instanced online game, as they feel so wrong.

I thought guildwars was an utter joke.

The whole point of playing online is that you are playing with other people, why remove that part? Its a joke.

Have you played Mortal Online? It looks good. I can see from another of your posts that you have played Ultima Online, a game that I played for about 11 years lol. (Used to play)

Anyway, Mortal online is supposed to be a lot like UO, but like UO was before EA appeared and f***ed it all up.

I play on private servers so play the pre EA game (when it was good) although I haven't played in a long time. I have considered playing MO but am concerned it will just be another Darkfall. Its not really the style of game that lends well to FPS combat. (Fantasy in my opinion should stick with Point and Click or NeverWinter Nights 2 style)

I am still googling looking for this game and I come across a blog post of someone looking for the exact same thing as me, it seems every comment posted is saying have you tried such and such Space Combat Simulator... my imediate thought was huh what, he's not looking for a space combat simulator, he wants to have a space ship he can walk around (or atleast the bridge of one) and have real people as crew of that ship. This is exactly what I am looking for but all I can find is Flight Combat Simulators in space. Its such an over done genre now that its getting boring.

Give me something different...
