okay the main menu doesn't load. I start the game and stare at stars moving in the background. I'd really like to play this game.

Be sure to include all the informations you can: operating system, version of the build, opengl.txt, console messages.
There's two files that should have been created, but where they've been put will depend on your operating system. They're called stdout.txt and stderr.txt.
They should be in a Pioneer folder within your "My Documents" if you're on Windows.
That's also where you'll find the "opengl.txt" that Tichy mentioned
