How do I upload my Mod (Hi-Def textures)?

Hi,

I *love* FFED3D! I'v been playing it solidly for weeks, and it's so good to play that classic game with new graphics and sound.

I notice some of the models and textures in the game haven't been updated, so look a bit crappy.

I'm not a modeller, so can't replace all the remaining models. However, I have spent some time updating all the remaining textures for the original models with Hi-Def equivalents. It's not much, but it makes the old models look a bit better (especially planet surfaces which now have proper grass and water!), and it's my way of saying thanks to FFED3D community.

Screeenshots of the new textures can be seen here:  http://s665.beta.photobucket.com/user/nanite2000/library/FFED3D

How do I package these up into a .zip file that is suitable installation by a MOD manager, and where do I go to make it available to download from this site?

Thanks!

I think D1 has suspended all uploads/downloads to SSC at the moment as the site is being transferred to a new provider   http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/topic/3335-ssc-is-moving-providers/

That grass and water look a lot better 😎 not sure how how mod manger works on FFE3D it may just be a normal zip file which can be uploaded to the FFE3D file area.

Thanks Pinback,

I tried uploading to the FFED3D file area, but there's a message there that says "You cannot upload a new file". So instead, I've made the package available for download here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?afgxcwsf1bba0c8

2 words of warning: "It's Big". Most textures are 1024x1024 pixels (up from 128x128).

The file is 76MB, and it will increase the game's memory usage from 950MB to 1400MB!! So you may need a pretty beefy graphics card.

Please give me feedback. How does it look?

If it's too big to work reliably, I'll release a smaller package with 512x512 textures.

Soon as I move the site to a new provider I will unlock all uploading for everyone. I have been downloading the site all week, all 45GB of it so I don't want files being added as i download them all 🙂

It's just as well, since I missed a couple of textures out of the last package. Use this one instead:

Nice one Nanite2000

Not played FFE3D for a while and it on the XP computer, any instruction on where the textures go.

Yep:

  1. Unpack the .zip file.
  2. Copy the 'Textures' folder from there into the FFED3D root directory (i.e. the directory that contains the 'FFE D3D.exe' file). You'll be asked if you want to merge the contents of the Textures folders.
  3. Select 'Yes' and overwrite any existing files there.

You may want to backup your existing 'Textures' folder first, in case you want to restore any textures from another MOD.

Hope that helps.

FYI Nanite2000

The download area should be all set to use, just upload these to the FFED3D area. Or if they are to big I will upload them for you. Would you have a screenshot showing the improvements?

I've had reports of problems with the pack by another user on  http://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=8 , so I'll hold off for the moment until I can find out what's causing it. The MediaFire link above still works for now if anyone wants to try it.

I have screenshots here:  http://s665.beta.photobucket.com/user/nanite2000/library/FFED3D

Do you just want one decent screenshot, or will a link to that photo album be OK?

Hi Nanite2000,

Wicked stuff mate I think this will make all the difference to the game the screenshots look fantastic!

So how's it going with the high res texture pack? I tried to download it but the links are dead. I'd like to help if i can, even if it's testing.

Cheers & Best Wishes,

SB

In case anyone is still monitoring this thread, I thought you should know that I've *finally* uploaded an enhanced texture pack for use with AndyJ's mod of FFED3D that really transforms the look and feel of the planets  in the game.

Check it out:
