So glad I found this forum. I've been going through a tremendous sci-fi phase over the last few weeks. Though I love games of all kinds (fantasy RPG mostly), lately my appetite for space sims has been insatiable. I even looked up an old sandbox game I used to play on the Mac called Escape Velocity (I'm sure many of you know it). And I've been tinkering with demos here and there, reinstalling old games (and sometimes uninstalling them again). What's driving this re-discovered passion? Answer: the re-installation of X3 Reunion, totally on a whim. Now I can't get enough. (And though this is a matter of personal taste, I believe X2 and X3 are still the best of the best).

The thing I've discovered since sneaking around this forum over the last day or two that excites me the most has to be Pioneer Space Sim. When it nears completion and all the bugs are worked out, it'll be my own little 3D universe exploration software.... Not a game, not a game!

I had Freelancer many eons ago and don't even know where my game disks are. It was way too restrictive for me, if I recall. I'm kind of a sandbox person myself.

But I've never even heard of Tachyon. I'm reading the Wiki about it now. And I also found this YouTube video where the guy's voice at the beginning sounds exactly like one of the voice actors from Fallout 3:

Let me investigate this game some more. Thanks for the suggestion and also for the long list of links. This is going to keep me busy in these waning moments of 2010!

Hey Mark

Welcome to SSC and you will like Tachyon: The Fringe. And that voice you hear is Bruce Campbell from the Evil Dead and Army of Darkness movies. I try to keep the link list of games updated so, if you see any games that are missing from the list do please let me know about them and I will get them added.

Enjoy the stay

Well I didn't see one of my all time favorite games on the list, a whimsical space station simulator called "Startopia". I'm sure you know about it, but maybe these links will be useful....

Here's the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Startopia

Here's a Gamespot review giving an 8.3 rating: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/startopia/

Here's a YouTube video showing some gameplay:

Here's an Amazon link to buy it with an advertised price of a whopping $70!: http://www.amazon.com/Startopia-Pc/dp/B00004WI4B

This is some post-Muckyfoot Productions information from one of the developers of the game which (when last I checked) contained some useful links about patches and what-not (though you can still find patches elsewhere): http://home.comcast.net/~tom_forsyth/st ... topia.html

Even ten years later, this game looks amazing to me. I especially loved the environmental decks and how you could morph the land to your liking and create virtual jungles, deserts, tundras or whatever you want in space. Your visitors would then react positively or negatively to the virtual greenhouse you created, and you can hire others to plant and harvest ingredients which you could then sell for a profit or use to enhance your station. You could view your station from a bird's eye perspective or zoom all the way down to view your masterpiece up close, even jumping into the perspective of a visitor for a kind of first-person (random) tour of your station. This game took many, many hours away from my life!
