To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Turn-based Spaceship Combat Games?

Haven't posted in awhile, but lately I've had an idea ... I've always liked the idea of trying to do a game someday, yeah I'm over ambitious, but still.

Anyway, there is a slight upset in my early design, to make the game turn-based or real time. When I think spaceship combat I typically imagine it in real time, but I wanted to have an extra element of 'away-team' squad combat ... which when I think of the examples tends to lend itself more to turn-based.

So I'm looking for some good examples of turn-based spaceship combat to see if anything like it inspires me in that direction. Bonus points if its on a 2d playing field and gives you a sense of ship maneuverability (So not exactly FTL's split screen just popping shots at each other type situation).

Anyone have any suggestions in this regard?

Master of Orion 1, 2 & 3 comes to mind first.

Space Rangers 2

Galactic civilizations 2 & 3

Sid Meier’s Starships

Horizon

4000 AD - pure turn-based strategy! Oh - you meant video games! Ho-hum!

Well boardgames can have some good examples too 🙂

But a game that focuses on a single or small group of ships would be good.

Not sure if this what you mean but you could take a look at the Trese Brothers Star Trader game  http://www.tresebrothers.com/ although it only available on mobile but they are working on a sequel which should be coming to PC.

Also their is the smugglers series  http://store.steampowered.com/app/295500/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_7 but it may have static ship combat.

Moved the thread here as the other forum is just for general PC/Console games.

How do you feel about real-time with a pause feature?

There was an old game called Critical Mass that was turn-based. You were given a squad of ships. Well worth considering. I'd post a link, but I have new phone and haven't figured the copy paste yet. It's by a Sean O'connor.

Certainly considering it for if I went real time instead.

Star Wolves is worth a look. Squad level turn-based / pausable real-time hybrid.
